GZW2K1 Creative Struggling For 'Heatwave Hook'
Sources suggest GZW2K1 officials are having a tough time coming up with scenarios for the traditional 'Heatwave Carnage' this year. Almost every Heatwave event has seen its fair share of chaos, riots, arrests, mass-brawls and shocking revelations. Last year's 'Heatwave V' was seen as a huge disappointment, and there is apparently a lot of pressure on GZW2K1 to get it right this year.
There has been talk of finding an excuse to re-ignite the traditional summer war between HKWF and GZW2K1, but it would seem both parties are struggling to come up with a motive for yet another grand battle to take place. The general feeling is that fans would find it boring if the GZW2K1/HKWF feud was to go on for yet another chapter.
There was talk of perhaps adding some celebrity glamour to the event by bringing in Christian Bale to fight against BDR (Bale lost his temper with Dowling on the set of "ShackMan Salvation," the infamous rant being leaked online). Bale was available for Heatwave but the idea was pulled as GZW2K1 officials felt the Hollywood encounter would alienate the Hong Kong crowd.
GZW2K1 does not usually mix with celebrities, Jack Nicholson's appearance at Heatwave IV being one of the only exceptions.
Whatever the case, time is running out for GZW2K1 to think of something 'big' for Heatwave, and so we can likely expect some major surprises and shocks in the run-up to the big pay-per-view on June 30th.
Battle Royale and Ladder Match Blockaded
There was a major push backstage for either a Contest of Champions Battle Royale or Cash The Cheque Ladder Match to be the opening match for Heatwave this year. Both ideas were thrown out after much debate, as it seems either match had just as many detractors as it did supporters.
If it were to have gone ahead, the plan for the Contest of Champions Battle Royale would have been to include everyone on the Heatwave card as participants, as well as all other members of the active GZW2K1 roster, as well as members of other GZG360 rosters and also some special guests.
We can reveal Monarch was written to draw number one, lasting until the end before being eliminated by the eventual winner, Davina Cameron.
If a Cash The Cheque Ladder Match were to have gone ahead, word has it the match would end in a tie, with both Monarch and Sincere grabbing the cheque. This finish was booked as early as December '08, according to some insiders.
At separate stages, both matches were given the green-light, before then being pulled for various reasons.
With all this indecisiveness, it seems someone needs to get their house in order...
Fans Unhappy With Bane Heel Turn
Many fans seem unhappy with the heel turn of Bane, who was very over and extremely popular with his long-running 'Sleep/Bed' gimmick, which has recently been scrapped, as Bane has returned to his 'Bad-Ass Big Guy' roots which first made him a star. Some see the move as a backward step for one of wrestling's most unique characters.
Bane has been given considerably less mic-time as he assaults various GZW2K1 roster members, seemingly at random. The heel turn has, however, been gaining favour in recent weeks with the 'Lord Deacon Bane' gimmick, and BDR as the sidekick.
Bane himself was said to be unhappy with the heel turn, but it's no secret the GZW2K1 creative team underused him as a comedy face, instead favouring 'Bad Assess' such as Zander Frost and Seth Raide.
A Facebook group was launched demanding the return of the 'Sleep' gimmick. So far 1, 256 people have joined.
Bane is 37 years-old and has a well documented history of spinal injuries. It's worth noting that Bane has been hitting his powerbomb finishing manoeuvre less upon his return, instead favouring a big boot to his opponent's face. One wrong move and Bane could find himself under the knife once again, which may explain his relaxed move-set.
