Wait, something is wrong. I cropped all that white section. Then saved it. How can it be back?

Not bad. I can see one of those annoying occasions I mentioned earlier about trying to find pics that match with lighting and all that. Can you see the right hand side of the mask? it should be dark with the right side of Phantom to make it seem like it's not just stuck on. It'll either take some work on your part, or find another pic of a mask where the light hits the right direction.
Also, there is a section on the left where it wasn't desaturated.
Overlays and blurs can help mask these kinds of things sometimes. Again, though, I don't know what Gimp has got in that regard. If you need fonts, I can send you some?

That's what it was! I forgot about the lighting issue. Shit! So if I can try to recreate some of the shadow that's there, I can start on fixing the mask. As for the part on the left... I never noticed that, but now, I'm kind of in two minds about it. I kind of like it, though I thought I got it all. It's tricky and Gimp does have a few things in common with 'shop, but some of those things aren't so easy to use. At least, not yet anyway. Luckily, I still have the unedited pic to work from as far as lighting goes. I'll try later though, take a wee break from the madness-inducing trial and error Thanks for the help and feedback, peeps.

Out of interest, why aren't you using PS?

Last I heard, getting PS cost 3 figures. Most anti-virus programs don't approach that, you know? Could get the trial, I suppose

Apply a gradient to the mask. Transparent > dark gray.

Is it that simple? I'll try soon, see what happens

And lower the opacity of the gradient to about 75%. Gradients have all sorts of uses. JUST LIKE LAYER MASKS.

For the simple shit we do on here, we just don't need layer masks

Gradients? Reduce? 75%?
I JUST CAN'T DO IT, CAPTAIN!

Light blur effect on the mask and gradient applied to it. Courtesy of Ish for arming me with Photoshop and a shitload of fonts. This might be it! Keeping the one above for comparison.
