*Ring Ring*
"Roadkill Cafe, you kill 'em, we grill 'em. Can I take your order?"
“Yep, I’ll take one flattened champ, with a side of tasered meat head”
"Ah, the Sunday Special. Want fried table splinters with it?"
“Hmm, hell, why not, jumbo on the splinters…..You only live once.”
"Excellent! We'll have it ready in 3-5 days, whenever we can scrounge everything up."
“Ill look forward to it. In the mean time, how are you holding up?”
"Could be worse...could be a lot better. Still trying to process what's driving Mongrel and his group. I really thought he was putting GZW first to fight the Mayhem gang, and not even a month later he's screwing me over to help Piper win a title. What gives?"
“It’s not unheard of for someone to turn their back on what they believe in that world. Screwing over folk is all part and parcel. Question is, what are you going to do about it?”
"What I'm going to do is get that title back. What will probably happen is that at least seven people will do worse than put me through a table. I've fought tough odds before, but fighting off two angry forces is going to be nearly impossible."
“I’d be more sympathetic to your cause, but y’know…….and you did bring the Clan Mayhem thing on yourself.”
"I'd like to invoke the well-known legal prescident of 'They Started It First'."
“Oh please darling, I have four kids. Doesn’t matter who starts it. You just have to be the one to end it.”
"That's easy to say for a kids' squabble over a favorite toy. Not so much when it's seven versus two with weapons and concrete floors involved."
“What do you think titles are? The favourite toy in a box full of broken hot wheels. You can’t let yourself get sucked. Find the higher ground and take it, while making your intentions very bloody clear. You presented a big threat to them at the show. Run with it. They have the numbers, but you’ve stood against worse.”
"Do you really think I want to? It just..."
There's an audible sigh from his end of the phone.
"...sucks being the one guy deemed the protector of GZW. The world champion, your husband, hasn't stepped up to the plate. Mongrel and his ilk dropped that responsibility with no hesitation. Alex? Champa? Even you? Nope, nope, nope. No, it's up to the Gilespies to save GZW, and if this is how we're thanked for it...sometimes I'm not sure it's worth saving."
“Who says it needs saving? It is, what it is. What’s happening right now is still putting bottoms on seats. It’s still drawing people in. I never came back to save, I came back to inspire, to lend strength. You can give people hope that you can play by the rules and succeed, and that’s great. You can do more than I could. Hell, you already are. Losing faith though? That’s almost as bad as laying down for them. You’re better than that. I have to believe that”
"Do I, though? Besides my wife and the Cheery Bus Driver, who else is rallying behind the GZW cause? That's what I hate about the situation. I don't want to duck this fight. I just wish that, for once, somebody else would too, for longer than a couple shows."
Silence followed from her end of the line, her tone changing only slightly when she spoke again.
“We can all wish love, but what is the GZW cause? What do you think that entails? From where I’ve been stood it’s always been about giving your all. “
"And I have. Where has that gotten me? A 10 minute title reign with more bruises and splinters in my back. I could have retired...no, I could have stayed retired four years ago and we would have been just fine. I got back in the business to help a friend and try to make GZW better than it was. Guess what that's amounted to? Not. One. Thing. Nothing's changed, except that I'm older and more beat up. It's getting harder and harder to find reasons to keep 'giving my all' for nothing good."
“We’ve all be where you are right now love. You don’t think I’ve had ten minute title reigns? Did you see my World title run? Right now come’s the real test, the real career defining moment. Its all about how you come back from this. You can either spring back on the momentum you ended the show with, or you can roll over and indulge in your pity party. You left a strong impression, you left them wanting more. They weren’t talking about your five minutes as champ they were already wondering what happens now. You’re the one they are watching, you the one who came out of our match showcasing as a champion. You’re the one who beat two grumpy vets for the honour. Nobody can take that away from you. If your intent on the pity parade though sweetie, do let me know. I can bring streamers and cake.”
Several seconds of silence pass.
"The only party going down is the mosh pit around the heavy metal TV Title show. Piper has to live with knowing that she couldn't beat me fresh without help. I may be battle-worn, but at least I'm not a coward. Oh, and not to impose, but should you feel the impulse to make things a bit more fair in my direction anytime soon...I wouldn't be too opposed to that."
“Me? Make things fair? Does that fit my character these days?”
"Hey, I thought I was an inspiration. If you don't help, then you're just proving my case, and I can quit without regrets."
“I make no promises, but you know while I can I will have your back. Or at least you bloody should by now.”
"And I do appreciate it. Guess I'd better pre-stock more aspirin and ice packs for the weeks ahead."
“Aye, and no more stunts with a room full of crazy’s. Seriously, I don’t know how you walked out of there.”
"Well, walking is achieved when one places a foot in front of themselves, then presses forward while lifting the foot behind them, and repeating the motion until they reach their destination."
“Good gods, THAT’S where I’ve been going wrong all these years!”
"You really do learn something new every day!"
“True, on that note I’m going to let you go. Just thought I’d check in and see how you were really.”
"And now you know. Oh, I'm also a jerk because I never asked how your neck's doing."
“Hm, its fine. Not broke, s’all good. Nothing to worry about”
"Well that's good. Just don't let not worrying lead to it getting broken again."
“Its usually people landing on it that leads to it being broken again……but as I said. Its fine, just stiff I think”
"Hey, I'm right here!"
“I know, and I’m not trying to make you feel bad. As I said, its all good. “
"Of course. You'd better get back to those kids before they turn a toy fight into a steel cage scaffold match."
“True, on the Brightside if this wrestling lark goes arse up I’d make a pretty awesome official. Still, you take care and don’t forget to get your angry on.”
"'Beware' the nice ones...pun intended."
