She hated this city. She was sure it had some appeal, it must do given the tourists everywhere, but for her it was cold. A hostile, seedy little corner of the planet you couldn’t afford to let your guard down in. People here lived for themselves, it seemed fitting to her that this hell hole was where Davina chose to dwell. Staring out of the window at the seemingly upmarket apartment Eva let go of the breath she hadn’t even realised she’d been holding. In the passenger’s seat her daughter appeared even smaller than normal. Her long blonde hair was pulled back into a plait tied with blue ribbon. The colour matched her tartan skirt and painted nails. Silver Dr Martens and a “Cure” t-shirt completed the look she had chosen for the day. Around her neck was a small sliver locket, she played with it as she stared out the window. She’d been quiet the entire journey, staring out the window and playing with her chain.
Eva: Sweetheart? I’m going to go make sure she’s in. Can you wait here?
Slowing turning to look at her mother Lucy offer a smile and a nod.
Eva: You know you don’t have to do this, right? We can go back home, get cosy and relax.
Lucy: I know…..I have to though Mum.
It wasn’t the answer she wanted to hear, she was as stubborn as her bloody father at times. She hated seeing that look in her eyes. The swish of leather from her trench coat as she slipped out of the car was joined by the metallic click of her new rock heels. She knew where she was going, and how to get in without permission. Hayden had been very quick to share all she knew. She always was if you knew how to make her talk. It was a nice enough building, though as she climbed the stairs the dread mounted. Biting it back with her confident mask falling into place she wrapped heavily on the door. There was no answer. At least not at first. After a good minute, the sound of the door unlocking good be heard when it opened. Greeting the woman was exactly who she came for but not how she remembered her. Standing behind the door was the former leader of the Slaughterhouse in just her thong and a vest, hair unkempt. She does a double take before sneering a little.
Davina: What do you want...?
If she was surprised she doesn’t show it at all. She barely looks at the woman, at all. It smelled like a brewery even from here. She dreaded to think what the inside of the flat was like.
Eva: Hope your room looks better than you do.
Davina: Why do you care what my place looks like? I never invited you here.
Eva: Nope, not me you didn’t. Lucy asked to see you. You two have been talking, right? She’s downstairs waiting. I’ll take a slow walk back down to get her, you can clean up, febreze your place and get dressed.
Davina: Excuse me? Did I just? My Lucy is here?
Eva: You heard me, now get fixing shit. If I come back up here and get even a hint of alcohol from you….
She didn’t need to finish her sentence, she’d already turned to walk away. Davina watches for as long as it took Eva to disappear down the first flight of stairs then shuts the door. Walking as slow as humanly possibly and holding her daughters hand, Eva’s arguments as to why they needed to leave had fallen on deaf ears. Bribery had failed miserably too. Her grip tightening on her mothers hand, Lucy knocked. The door opened much quicker this time. Davina had obliged the request that was more of a demand and cleaned up herself and the apartment. Standing there in a pair of stretch jeans and a roll neck jumper with her hair tied back neatly she takes the scene in front of her in, eventually looking down at the child and trying to smile.
Davina: Lucy?
Looking up at Eva before answering she subconsciously leans away from Davina.
Lucy: Can we come in?
Davina: Of course you can, darling.
She stands aside, allowing entry into her apartment. Literally dragging Eva over the threshold the little girl lets her attention touch on everything at once. Drinking it in with wary eyes, a look reflected by the woman she thought of as a mother. Wrinkling her nose she turns her emerald stare to Davina.
Lucy: What’s that smell?
Davina: What smell?
She casually heads for the window, opening it a little to rid the room of what Febreze wasn't touching, the smell of fags and booze. The overall feeling was of a draft-y bowl of dried flowers. Pushing her free hand into her pocket Eva tried not to breathe too deeply. Lucy, she just stared. Davina breaks that silence with the clacking of her heels over her laminate flooring, closing the gap between them. She stands in front of Lucy, getting to one knee and eye level.
Davina: So what brings my little girl here, eh?
Standing her ground it was different now, wasn’t it? She was bigger and she wasn’t here with the woman alone.
Lucy: You did. You called, and called, and called.
Davina: Only me? Are you sure you didn't want to come and see mummy?
Letting go of Eva’s hand she was becoming braver by the minute. Still she took a step back from the woman. Somehow she made “mummy” sound like a cruel word.
Lucy: No, I live with my mummy. I did want to come and see you though. I wanted to see things…..and talk.
Davina stands back up, glancing at Eva ever so briefly before she rests her eyes on the child again.
Davina: Well, you don't live with her yet but of course I have time to talk to you. Would you like a drink?
Shaking her head Lucy did what all small children do when in a new place. Begin to explore. Heading over to a shelf unit behind her she scrutinises everything.
Lucy: My mum’s taking me to get ice cream when we leave.
Davina: Alright, we can do that. And what did you want to talk about?
Turning to face the woman, shark like stare radiating more of her father than either woman would have liked she actually smiles.
Lucy: I’m not going anywhere with you lady. My mummy brought me here because you like to tell lies. Why? What do you want?
Davina: Lies? Why do you think I am telling lies? What reason would I have to do such a thing to my little girl?
Shrugging her shoulders and putting the ornament she’d just pulled off the shelf back down. She sighs, a big sigh for such a little person. Out of the corner of her eye should could see her mum staring a hole through Davina. She looked mean….she looked like she did when that lady cut in front of them at Disney world.
Lucy: Cause you’re mean.
Davina: I am mean. We are all a little mean, aren't we, darling? Are you going to tell me you're not mean as well sometimes?
Lucy: When I’m mean it’s cause Daniel’s being loud. Why are you mean?
Davina: So, it's okay to be mean if you think it's right, dear? I do too.
Lucy: Nope. I feel bad……you don’t. You like it.
Davina: Maybe I am just better at hiding when I feel bad. Bit like Eva over there.
At the mention of the raven haired beauty Lucy looked over at her.
Lucy: When do you feel bad?
Davina: It depends, darling. But is this really why you've come all the way here for when we could spend some quality mummy daughter time together?
Not feeling so brave anymore, she moves back towards Eva. She was ignoring all the darlings and sugary sweet words. Didn’t the evil queen disguise her poison in something nice too?
Lucy: No, I don’t think I want to do that. See……Mum didn’t want to bring me today. I didn’t really want to be here either….but I HAD to. Can I ask you something?
Davina: Well, of course she didn't want to bring you here but I am happy she did. It's lovely to see you and how big you've gotten. And if you gave me a chance like you gave daddy, I'm sure we would be fine. What would you like to ask?
Eva: Luce-
Lucy: No mummy, it’s okay. Why did you try and hurt my brother and sister?
Davina: Did I? Has someone been telling you this? And what reason would I have to do that?
Lucy: You hurt my Mum too. You hurt everyone…
Davina: Lucy, I don't know who is trying to tell you these things but I wouldn't do anything to hurt you. Eva, though? I might have tried to hurt her but that's because she tried to hurt me first, in fact she did if you look here.
She inches closer, enough so she could point to the scar on her face and the child could see quite clearly what Eva had done once upon a time. If she was bothered at all she didn’t show it. She’d already talked to both parents, she knew about their misdeeds and she knew they hadn’t lied to her. The internet had confirmed most things.
Lucy: I know what my Mum did, she told me. So, why did you hurt them?
Davina: I never tried to hurt them, darling. I promise.
Her stare never left the woman, so much like her father when she wanted to be. It was unnerving to watch. Folding her arms across her chest she took a deep breath.
Lucy: Mum, did you hurt this lady?
It took her a few seconds longer than she would have liked to find her voice, yet she did. Eva had no idea where the hell this was going, but she didn’t like it. Her sweet little girl looked so angry. Her eyes blazing. It was a hard look on a kid.
Eva: Yes……you know that.
Nodding her head in agreement, because yes. She did know that. Just like she knew several horrible truths about her dad she hadn’t until Davina and Google got involved.
Lucy: See, mum doesn’t lie. Didn’t your mum ever tell you fibs were bad?
Davina: My mum?
The usually confident woman had to pause. Her mother? That was something no one knew anything about and it seemed she was more than happy to keep it that way. Her face hardens with a smile plastered on the front.
Davina: My mum didn't tell me anything. But that doesn't mean I am really a bad person. No more than Eva or your father. And does admitting you did something bad make the bad act okay, sweetie?
She didn’t like it when Davina called her sweetie. Though she wouldn’t let her know that.
Lucy: Mum cover yours ears……Lady, you’re full of shit. I’m a little person, I know that. I still need to grow and learn, but I know some things. I know enough to tell me what’s right and what’s wrong. You talk in circles, going round and round and round……but you don’t say anything. You are a bad person, you are. You lie and you lie and you just tell more lies to make it worse. I know you tried to hurt my brother and sister, I know because I saw it. I know lots of stuff.
She hadn’t covered her ears and she had been momentarily stunned. She knew the kid had seen some things, but the attack too. Oh she was so grounded, no computers either. Why the hell did they broadcast that? She was annoyed of course, but more than that she was worried at just what her baby had witnessed.
Eva: Lucy….
Lucy: No….no Mummy. It needs to stop…..
Turning her attention back to her biological mother her voice was calm. Her eyes blazing even as she stood close enough to Eva to be hiding behind her.
Lucy: People make mistakes, it’s part of being people…..but they learn. They feel bad for being mean and they try to be good. They try to make people happy. You don’t. You lie about being naughty and try and make people think they are wrong about it all. It doesn’t change it, it doesn’t mean you didn’t do it. I asked you a question and you lied.
How was she supposed to react to the fact her own child wanted to put her in her place? Worse so, that she was right about everything she said, whether she could admit that one or not? She glares at Eva. It was obvious to her that the woman who had stolen the life she wanted was behind this. She looks back at the child, then headed back to the window to close it. It was cold enough in the room.
Davina: Lucy? I understand you are angry about things you have been told and about things you might have seen on the television. But you have to understand that you cannot believe everything you see. If you could, that would make Eva and your father very bad people, would it not? I mean, after all, daddy didn't even want you. He said that himself and you've given him a chance. Do I not deserve the same chance?
She turns around again, poker face in place, and giving nothing away as she switches her gaze between her daughter and arguably one of her greatest rivals. Eva for her part in this was still stunned. This was her quiet child…the one who read books and liked to draw. She’d never heard her raise her voice, never mind lose it like this.
Lucy: I’m nine, not three. Stop talking like I’m stupid. I know who my mum and dad are, I know you’re trying to make me think they’re like you. Just so you don’t seem so bad…..
She was losing her calm edge now, tears welling in her eyes, yet she refused to look away. Refused to allow them to spill either.
Lucy: My mum and dad love me. You don’t love anything but yourself. I saw what you did on TV and I saw it in real life too. Dad cried over what you did to mum, and I cried. You hurt Lucan and Georgia and they didn’t do anything to you…..and you don’t even care. You just cared about you. Even now you care about you.
Burying her head in her mother’s side, Lucy was trying very, very hard not to cry. It wasn’t a fight she was winning. Holding her close Eva ushered her towards the door. They were leaving.
Davina: Eva...a word...
If looks could kill the blonde would have folded on the spot. Kneeling down to offer a few whispered words to her daughter, she brushes her tears away with a thumb and plants a kiss on her cheek. Wiping her eyes on the sleeve of her shirt the little girl steps out into the hallway leaving the two women alone.
Eva: Before you say anything, whatever you might think of me. I didn’t tell her anything about our drama. As far as she was concerned outside of the ring you’d never touched me.
Davina: Bullshit. All this to try and get to me? What, you think because you people are having the time of your life, playing successful champions and whatever else you do, you think you can grow a set and try to tip me over the edge or something? You actually think you're in control here, don't you?
Whatever face she wore before had disappeared the moment the girl left the apartment. She moves closer.
Davina: Poisoning my child against me? And I am the evil one, am I?
Arching a brow Eva shook her head. She had felt sorry for her a few moments ago. Now though?
Eva: Are you really that deluded? In your sad little head have you not considered that if I wanted to poison her mind I could have done it without coming to this arsehole of a city? I made her stay in the car when we first arrived because I knew what kinda shit heap you’d been living in. Christ, you don’t exactly make a secret of the fact that you’re fucking your way through the dregs of London society. Drinking, snorting and Odin knows what else your way through your pointless little life. You did this all by yourself. You! Shit…….now I see why you got on so well with Hayden…..she’s a deluded little fuck who likes to blame the world for her problems too.
Taking a step back from the blonde, more to avoid lashing out than anything she might do. She shoots a look at the door.
Eva: Your calls tipped her off. She’s a smart kid, she knows how the internet works. Everything you tried to use against us she searched and she watched and she asked us about. We didn’t lie to her, why would we? She begged to come here, she wanted to assure herself she was nothing like you. That you were capable of at least trying to be a better person, because after everything she’d seen you do. Including leaving her on a bloody car roof…….She needed to believe you could be better.
Snorting in a way that indicated she was as disgusted with the woman as she was with the smell of stale smoke and old beer, she turned to leave.
Eva: You know what’s worse……I actually stood up for you. I tried to give you the chance to give her a good impression. She asked me why I hurt you, I didn’t bother trying to deny it. I told her straight, I didn’t even really try to justify it……you know what she said? That amazing child you’ve tried so bloody hard to break and shape in your own dysfunctional bloody image? She said she wished I hadn’t stopped there. She actually wished that I killed you. Can you believe that? That child cries when you kill a house spider. You’ve got nobody to blame but yourself Davina. Any opinion that child has of you……you caused it.
Of all the words that came from her, a select few stood out to the blonde who seems to mull them over.
Davina: She wants me dead...?
Eva: You threaten and hurt the people she cares for the most. What did you really expect? As far as she can see you’ve done nothing but try and destroy the security she clings to. You want to ask her yourself? We both know she’s probably listening in anyway.
Davina: Mm...She won't be listening. She'll be waiting for you, won't she...?
She clicks her heels over the floor towards the kitchenette area, picking something up and returning with a blade she probably used earlier for some poor attempt at cooking.
Davina: We'll see how true your words ring, won't we. I have nothing to lose, clearly so what does it matter anymore.
She musters a smirk before she suddenly holds the knife out and drives it deep into her shoulder, letting out an almighty scream as it slowly slips out and falls to the floor. Immediately she runs out into the hallway, her face full of terror as she falls onto the floor in front of the child. Sitting, she shuffles back as if in retreat.
Eva: You crazy bitch….
Scrambling to her feet Lucy stares in wide eyed horror at Davina, she took in the blood and the pained expression. Her emerald stare darted back and forth between the two women finally resting on Eva.
Lucy: Mum?
Eva: Come away baby…
She didn’t need telling twice, moving around the blonde she edges towards Eva. Throwing up her arms to be lifted. She was a big girl now, but the crazy had just got way out of hand.
Lucy: Why did she do that to herself? Mum? You didn’t do that right? Right?
Shooting a look at the bleeding former champion, Eva picks up her daughter. The little girl’s face momentarily burying itself in her neck. She could feel her heart pounding against her, the tears were coming thick and fast as she shuddered through them. Blood was too real, didn’t matter whose it was.
Eva: Shoulder Luce? Come on…..
Glaring at the bleeding woman, Eva could have quite happily have aimed a kick at her as she passed. She wouldn’t have wasted her time with such a small knife…..or a flesh wound. That wasn’t the issue though. The issue was the child currently verging on hysterical crying, clinging to her as if her life depended on it.
Lucy: She’s bleeding. Mum, she’s bleeding. We need to leave now, please?
It took a lot of effort to step over Davina while carrying the child, yet she managed it. Her tone was calm though cold. She was certain Lucy wouldn’t hear. Even being held she was sobbing so loudly, with her head buried so intently she wouldn’t hear much.
Eva: If you knew anything at all about this girl. You’d realise it’s the blood she’s crying at. Not that it’s you bleeding it.
Her tone softens out of ear shot of the blonde. Soft murmurings and soothing words she had always used naturally with her daughter. She’d cry herself to sleep at this rate, though considering the therapy sessions she’d be needing after this, that might have been a good thing. Davina just watches as the pair of them disappear, the sound of Eva’s boots fading when she moves her hand from her shoulder. It was bleeding thick and fast, the gash a bit deeper than it should have been. She presses on the wound again, ignoring the mess as she heads back inside and closes the door on the world around her.
Eva: Sweetheart? I’m going to go make sure she’s in. Can you wait here?
Slowing turning to look at her mother Lucy offer a smile and a nod.
Eva: You know you don’t have to do this, right? We can go back home, get cosy and relax.
