He'd finally managed to catch a moment for himself. The twins were in bed and Daniel was spending the evening with his other uncle and his children while Eva and Lucy had finally gone to see Davina, for what good that might do. He didn't like it but he trusted his wife's judgement and her ability to keep Davina in check. She made damn sure to reassure him on the way out. Sitting in the kitchen with a mug in one hand and a pen in the other, he scribbles letters in boxes, on his way to completing a puzzle he'd been on for a few days.
The wailing had switched to sniffles, though the car ride home had been mercifully quite. Eva couldn’t make this one better, nothing she could say could take away what the poor kid had just seen. Lucy was still clinging to her, her nails actually digging into her mother’s hand. The door closed behind them quietly enough to avoid waking the twins. Dragging her feet Lucy let herself be led to the kitchen. Her face was red, eyes bright with tears she didn’t have left to shed. She’d cried too much already. Taking the beaker of water as it’s offered to her she gulps at it. Her voice was wavering and hoarse as she offered her thanks. It was the first thing she’d said since leaving the apartment. Eva was holding on, utterly defeated but too confused and concerned about Lucy to give into what she felt. He looks at the display, trying to make sense of what he's seeing, eyes flitting between his wife and nine year old daughter.
Icon Corbin: What happened...?
Wiping her mouth on her sleeve Lucy welled up again before she could stop herself.
Lucy: She was bleeding daddy! So much blood!
Icon Corbin: The f- Come here, baby.
He drops his pen, leaving the mug as well to slip off his seat and rush over to the child and put his arms around her to console her. He looks up at Eva for some kind of explanation. For her part the woman just shrugged, looking everywhere but at Lucy. The child’s muffled explanation of what she saw was lost on them.
Icon Corbin: Evalyn? What's going on? What blood? Why is my baby crying like this?!
Closing her eyes against the headache building behind them she took a deep breath. Her voice was hollow, little above a whisper.
Eva: She saw her mother throw herself out of her apartment screaming, begging me to stay away while she bled profusely all over the hallway. Up until that point she was fine, put Davina in her place and everything.
Icon Corbin: Why would she do that?
Eva: Why does she do anything?
Icon Corbin: What...bloody...happened? None of this is making any sense and in the mean time we have a child in hysterics here.
He holds Lucy closer, feeling his chest dampening with the tears seeping through his top.
Eva: Yeah, kinda got that on the car trip back here darling. Thanks for the update though. I might’ve missed it otherwise…
Catching herself before she full on lost her temper, she didn’t want to vent her aggression at him. It wasn’t his fault. Lucy lifted her head, snot and drool making her face wet as she looked up at her mum.
Lucy: You didn’t do it, did you Mum?
She winced at that, the flicker in her eyes betraying just how deep the question cut. She couldn’t see the hurt in her little face, the fear… Letting her attention rest on the tiles ahead of her, and feeling that familiar fear and bile rising she was feeling trapped.
Eva: No Lucy, I didn’t. She didn’t like that you stood up to her and stabbed herself…….as insane as that sounds.
Icon Corbin: You're right. That does sound insane...
He tried not to let the doubts set in but in reality, it was just as likely that his wife would cut her as it was that Davina would do something just to spite others. And it's not like he was really going to ask the child what she saw for sure at this point. He stands, lifting his daughter with ease and strokes her head in an attempt to calm her down. It works to some degree, the crying slowing to a heavy breathing as she drifts off. She’d exhausted herself today.
Icon Corbin: Good girl, you just take it easy.
He was happy to let her doze off in his arms, slowly walking around with her.
Icon Corbin: If it's true, what exactly pushed her over the edge to cut herself? She's more likely to hurt everyone around her first before ever putting herself at risk. What was said? What would even offend that bi...
Eva: Why do you always do that? Try and rationalise everything that crazy whore does? It’s like you have this compulsive need to protect her without realising you do it…..
Rubbing her eyes she turns away from him, moving round the kitchen without seeing anything. It was easier than seeing too much. Even the fresh coat of paint couldn’t erase the memories here.
Eva: Lucy upset her. Did you know she actually wished her dead? Davina didn’t believe it. Wanted to see for herself just what the kid would do. So she stuck a knife in her shoulder, screamed like a banshee and threw herself into the hallway. She made out I’d done it, backing away and shaking like a kicked dog. I wouldn’t have wasted my time with a vegetable knife, or gone for her shoulder. I wouldn’t have been out to wound the bitch. It was the blood that set her off, though thinking I did it couldn’t have helped.
Icon Corbin: I see...
Eva: Up until that point Lucy was in control. She put her in her place, said everything she needed to say…..I fucked up. I shouldn’t have taken her there……I actually tried to reason with her too. You don’t think I know how soul destroying it is to grow to hate one of your parents?....Fuck…
She knew Lucy was well and truly off in the land of nod because she’d not told her off for swearing. Even in a doze she was quick to remind people of their manners. Pushing a hand through her hair she turns to look at them. Lucy looked small, vulnerable as she clung to him. It was good that she’d calmed down. Leon’s face looked just as calm.
Icon Corbin: So...are you still sure you don't want me to talk to her myself?
Eva: And do what? Say what? We went there today because her child, her own flesh and blood wanted to talk to her. From the get go all she did was try and convince her that they were one and the same. That she was no different to the rest of us and deserved a chance. We’re all bad people really, don’t you know? When she couldn’t twist the kid she resorted to scaring her……I mean….she took a knife out of her drawer and stabbed herself….No sane, rational person does that. Why would any parent want their child to think that? Why would they want them to see that pain? Nothing good is going to come of you going there.
Icon Corbin: So, what? We should just leave it? Let her do something so crazy and just get away with it? She thinks she's a broken woman now, just wait til I have had my fucking way...
Eva: Story of our lives sweetheart.
Icon Corbin: I'm serious. I'm going...now.
Eva: So am I, you can’t.
Icon Corbin: Going where, Evalyn? A ride to pretend this isn't happening? I'm going to see this bitch.
Eva: What? No you tool! I’m serious that you are not going anywhere. I never said sod all about riding away from this.
Icon Corbin: You gonna stop me? Take her. I need to get my boots.
Eva: If I have to, yes. You can only make this worse. Right now you need to be here with your daughter. I can’t help her right now.
Icon Corbin: You don't get it, do you? I've had it with that woman. I'm going to make sure that she gets the message once and for all, Evalyn. Because I can try and console my baby girl as much as I like but while she's doing what she likes when she likes, even now, we're just covering her tracks and not solving anything, I have to see her.
Eva: I get it alright…..What are you going to do? When you get there and she gives you the bleeding heart routine?
Icon Corbin: What, you think that's going to work?
Eva: I don’t even know anymore…..and I don’t care. Nothing good will come from you going there.
Icon Corbin: You're worried about me going? Why?
Eva: She won’t listen to reason….and you aren’t really a reasonable man. Do you think I missed that look when you saw Lucy?
He huffs, his pacing getting a little quicker, a sign his mind was working faster as well. He shakes his head.
Icon Corbin: I can't let her get away with this, Evalyn. I can't. I can't just not do anything.
Eva: What choice do we really have?
Icon Corbin: Me going there and dealing with her, that's what. If she's prepared to hurt herself then she's not in a good place and I am not beyond fucking exploiting that. She won't touch me.
Eva: That’s not what I’m worried about, and you know it.
Resting her weight against the countertop she folds her arms across her chest. She was as close to out of the room as she could be.
Icon Corbin: Then what?
Eva: What you’ll do to her.
Icon Corbin: Who cares what I do to her?
Eva: You don’t think your daughter will have questions? You’re better than that, better than bloody Davina.
Icon Corbin: Am I...?
Eva: You are. Even if you do make me question it at times.
He looks at her, stares even before he eventually just grunts.
Icon Corbin: Okay! Okay, I won't go, bloody hell. At least...not right now. I make no promises at another time though but right now, this little girl needs us so let's deal with this first, ay?
Eva: Arm’s gone dead yet?
Icon Corbin: A little...
Tiptoeing over the tiles so her heels didn’t click, she helped him wake the little girl and lower her to her feet.
Eva: Lucy? Come on baby, you’ll be cosier in your bed.
Dazed and confused enough to stumble, she held on to both parents. Looking up at her husband Eva shook her head.
Lucy: Don’t want to sleep.
Icon Corbin: I think you do, sweetheart. And we'll be there, don't worry.
Too sleepy to argue, she nods, her eyes closing briefly as she fought to stay awake. Taking advantage of the fact, both of them gently lead her out the room.
