Munin was not herself, sure her outfit and hair appeared as perfect as it usually was, but there was something off. Like looking at a priceless painting tilted slightly of center. Perhaps it was the slight dark circles under eyes, or perhaps it was the fact that she had spent the better part of the last five minutes pushing a spoon around her coffee cup rather than drinking. One thing was for sure, her sundress may be bright and cheerful, but Munin was not.
Slipping soundlessly into the seat across from her, Eva pushed her sunglasses into her hair. She almost seemed offended by the sunshine at the best of times. Today it was a mere inconvenience. With the barest flicker of her black lined eyes, she takes the woman she thought of as her sister.
Wanna tell me about it, or do you really have that much sugar in your drink? You’ve been stirring it for bloody ages. Surprised the spoon hasn’t dissolved….
A small smile twitched the corner of Munin's mouth at that.
Well before I started stirring it, I started putting sugar in it...
Her sing song voice trailed off at the end, and her lips twisted into a mischievous smile.
So at this point the spoon could likely stand on its own. And wouldn't that be funny? A spoon standing straight up in jacked up coffee.
Letting the spoon go it clinked roughly against the glass mug. Munin almost seemed disappointed by this, but her smile stayed in place.
I guess there wasn't enough sugar in there after all, or maybe I just stirred it for too long.
Her own drink was a tower of cream and foam. Stirring it with her straw the raven haired beauty shrugged. She’d been part of this woman’s life for far too long, too long to be taken in by the distraction anyway.
Hmm, alright. You look tired, you’re distracted and that smile is the fakest thing I’ve seen all day……and I spent my morning with Will. You don’t have to tell me what’s bothering you, but I will look all disapprovingly in your general direction. See!
Pointing at her very serious face with a crimson nail she pulls her sunglasses back over her eyes. Munin shrugged her shoulders in a way that can only mean "It was worth try." There would be no need for Eva to be disapproving for long though. Eva was one of the only people on earth that could undo her with a look. It was a weakness that Leon and her had both lamented about in the past. So it was with a small sigh of defeat that Munin relaxed into her sink, leaving her abused drink to be forgotten once more.
I'm having nightmares...
Taking her sunglasses off completely, her bad habit of playing with them ending as she dropped them onto the tabletop. She leaned closer to the table, concern clouding her pale face.
What kind of nightmares?
Munin folded her arms across her stomach. It was a tell but it was better than covering her neck.
I dream that Alex is choking me, and screaming at me.
She cut her eyes away from Eva's all seeing hazel, unwilling to have her see all the pain that she just couldn't hide today.
He screams at me that it's all my fault, and that I don't matter. Right when my lungs feel like their about to explode, and I start to pass out...I wake up. At least I have been waking up at that point lately."
She visibly bristled, thought reigned it back with enough of her calm left intact to not seem confrontational. Alex was a sore spot, the fact that she hadn’t been able to break a few very specific parts off him was an ever sorer one.
A nightmare……not a memory, right?
Heh, I think all of GZW knows the answer to that one. I got the answers I needed out of that confrontation. They weren't the answers I wanted, but they were the results I pretty much expected.
She signals one of the servers with her free hand. Suddenly just looking at the sludge she had created was starting to turn her stomach. At least that's what she going to tell herself. When in doubt suppress, suppress, suppress.
I didn't count on the nightmares though. I've only been having them for three days now, but when you wake up from that twice in on night it starts to take its toll. Maybe they wouldn't be so bad if they were followed by a dream like the first one.
She shrugged her shoulders at a loss for anything else to say. Cameras could quite often lie and in their world they usually did. How often had something been blown out of proportion to seem bigger, worse, more shocking? She’d lost count, but had hoped against hope that the altercation between Munin and Alex was one of those. Exhaling heavily through her nose she stole a glance at the younger woman.
I’m going to pay the lad a visit I think……….with an axe….
Ha, that reminds me of that little red ridding hood bit back in the day.
She smiled warmly at her dearest friend and while it was tired it still held her own personal spark in it. Snorting in a way that indicated she wasn’t touching that one, she wipes cream off her nose.
Speaking of blokes I owe a kicking to…..What’s the deal with Jerry?
With Jericho?
She gave a small chuckle just as a young lady came to replace her destroyed coffee with a new sacrifice.
He feels responsible for Mayhem and me for getting put into this upcoming match with them. So he came back to sort things out...
I’ll bloody well sort him out……He should feel responsible, he is!
She looked up at Eva once more with an amused smile in place. You could almost see her coming back to life with the new topic. Her whole body seemed more animated somehow.
Yes, well he also shares your hatred of Alex. Though I'm telling you both that I will deal with him eventually, if he doesn't destroy himself first...and his new little bird with him.
Finding herself mentioning Amanda and Alex started to make her stomach churn, so it was with regret that she pushed her coffee away from her once more. Watching with the same kind of critical stare their adoptive mother had perfected Eva huffed. It was a curious relief to see how she picked up at the mention of the Dread King.
Fine.....I trust you.
Shifting in her seat so as to watch Munin better without being obvious about it, Eva folded her arms across her chest.
You spending much time with Jerry?
She stopped fiddling with her straw to glance up, her smile was uncontrollable.
Yes we have been training together, and we've run into each other a few times.
Aye, I saw at the fan signing. You lit up……just like now…
Munin titled her head to the side in a quizzical gesture. Her face was a practiced mask of innocence. Eva for her part almost choked on her drink. She very narrowly avoided foam coming out of her nose, but did succeed in dribbling it. Face flushed she wiped her mouth on her hand.
Warn me next time……I know you better than that, Nin. Either you’ve got a little crush on the lad, or he's a pawn in your plot of piss off Alex. Can’t suss which yet though.
Those words killed her mask immediately, leaving Eva to look into Munin's dark serious gaze.
Jericho is not a pawn...Things would be less complicated if he was, but...
She rubbed her eyes with her hands, thankful for her typical lack of make up. She honestly didn't know how Eva managed not to keep hers so perfect.
I'm a mess and I'm not sure how it happened, Eva. Part of me wants to at least pretend that Jericho is some pawn in some well thought out plot for Alex's destruction, but he isn't. It never even occurred to me to use him that way.
Unable to look Eva in the eye any longer, Munin dropped her head on folded arms. Eva wasn’t one for comforting gestures, the whole emotional thing was almost alien to her. In a world where you couldn’t afford to let your guard down, every bright young thing came with a dark and disturbing past, they’d done nothing to soothe. It was too little too late, and part of her was sure it would be the same now.
How long you been feeling like this, Munin?
About what or who, Jericho? I don't know, one moment I was poking fun at him, the next I was sparring with him, and the next...
She let out a deep breath, and let it out as she sat up. Her perfect mask was carefully back in place, a testament to how exposed she felt.
thing I know I am noticing how he smells, of all things. That's innocent enough right? Easily dismissed, and it would have been if it stayed at that.
But it's not stayed at that?
No...we were stuck in an elevator together for about twenty minutes...alone.
PG alone or I’m going to need an adult alone?
The look of flustered shock on Munin's typically composed face was down right comical.
What! No, it was PG very PG.
She may have cared a great deal for Munin, but her laughter made it clear she wasn’t above winding her up. Munin cleared her throat and mentally willed her face not to flush.
We talked really, and not about Alex or the Clown Squad. I showed him my shoulder scars...
Sorry love, I’ll behave. It’s just….you were never like this about Alex. Though you sure know how to pick em. Does Jerry know how you feel?
Munin cleared her throat and mentally willed her face not to flush.
We talked really, and not about Alex or the Clown Squad. I showed him my shoulder scars...Eva I don't even know how I feel, but I know that he showed me his scars, and I was a flustered idiot. I actually exclaimed out loud that he had nice arms before we got out, it was mortifying.
Needing something to do with her hands, Munin picked up her previously untouched coffee. Sipping it without a care that it had grown cold.
I could have explained that away as well. In fact I did, any woman would get flustered if an extremely attractive man took of his shirt. Especially if they were alone in an elevator, and that was that. We got out and hunted down a noodle shop and had a wonderful time. All awkwardness was forcefully forgotten for the rest of the evening.
She closed her eyes for a moment trying to hold onto the memory. I had been a wonderful night until...
That night is when I had the first nightmare, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the ones that followed.
She actually blushed slightly before forcing the rest of the words out of her throat.
I had a dream after the nightmare that...comforted me. Every since then I've been a bit of a mess, and the nightmares have been getting steadily worse.
A ragged sigh was the only sound for a moment, as Munin ran a hand through her thick black hair.
Jericho doesn't know anything as far as I know, thank gods for that. I haven't even seen him for the past few days, though that won't last long. He left me a voicemail about training...I must be losing my mind.
The cream in her drink was rapidly dissolving, and it was with some small inkling of mercy that she watched that rather than her friend.
Sweetheart, I’ve known Jerry for a long arse time. I’ve seen you two about….the way he looks at you….Well, you don’t see that too often from the Dread King. I reckon he’s just as daft on you. I’m not telling you to jump into bed with him……or I might be….I haven’t decided yet. ….But Alex don’t seem to be holding back none…..Did you see the latest installment with him and Mandy?
Munin visibly flinched at the mention of that short segment.
Yes I did...I had to get a new hotel room.
I’m guessing they were lucky you stopped at the room, right?
Yes, I couldn't help myself Eva. At first I just felt like someone punched me in the emotional stomach, and I wanted to tear them apart. Then I felt guilty about feeling that way. Considering my recent attraction to Jericho.
She grew quiet for a moment, and took another sip of her coffee. More for habit than an actual need to drink the cold brew. When she started to speak again her words were completely devoid of emotion, and her eyes had grown calculating with pure fury.
This was followed by a sudden realization.
Aye? What was that?
Either we meant so little to him that he could jump into bed at the first opportunity, or...maybe that wasn't the first time. Those two weeks of silence, and all those extra hours he was in the gym. Was it really just his obsession with Leon and the Title?...And that's when I destroyed the hotel room. It was worth every penny.
You know…..The more you think about it the worse it will be. You can play over every scenario, rethink every conversation, ask every question your mind will throw at you…..but it won't change the fact that the guy is a arsehole. Whatever else he had going on in his life, you guys should have been his stabling force. The part where he takes off his wrestling boots and becomes the person again. He doesn’t deserve any more of your attention.
Moments ticked by while Eva's intense hazel eyes held Munin's own dark gaze, and in those eyes Munin must have found what she was looking for. You could almost see the weight fall off her shoulders, when she finally looks away with a sigh of relief. This is how it always was with them. There was no need for pity or hollow words. All either of them needed was just this, brutal honesty and unwavering support.
You're right. Am I an idiot for still hoping that he can be happy someday?
No, if anything it makes you a better person than most. One day he will wake up and realise what he’s done and who he’s become. Until then, don’t give him anything else. Focus on your own happiness for once, Nin.
Munin nodded her head in silent agreement. She knew the woman that she had always considered an older sister was right, but she also knew that she wasn't all that great of a person. It was with that thought that a devilish grin twisted her mouth into a smile that could only mean pain for some unfortunate soul.
In the mean time...I think he has earned a little pain.
Swallowing a mouthful of coffee she shrugs.
More than a little I’d say.
Yes more than a little...if he wins that Title I might just have to take it away from him.
Go for it, make him realise he really has lost everything. It’s only fitting you should be the one to twist that knife.
Perhaps...well have to see what happens after this show. Right now my only focus can be on my upcoming match.
A good idea……considering the odds are against you.
For the first time since the conversation had veered away from the Dread King, Munin's eye were alight by an inner delight.
Yes they are, but its going to be so much fun...
And she’s back! There’s our scary Nin…..Where's Travis while you’re reconnecting with the dark side?
Munin's smile morphs into one of parental pride at the mention of her adopted son.
I make him eat vegetables, he already considers me part of the dark side.
With a small laugh she idly pushed her empty coffee cup away.
He actually qualified for an archaeology field study. You should have seen the look on his face when he got the letter.
He’s a bright lad. How long’s he gone for?
Two weeks, he might spend some time in Japan. He doesn't really like to be in the spotlight as of late.
Awesome, plenty of time to figure out what you’re going to do about Jerry and give Alex a kicking.
Munin shook her head with a laugh, and drew her empty mug close once more.
You know next time we do this we should have something stronger.
Agreed, and I won't let you convince me to drink anything neon this time. On that note though, you have a leather clad Scotsman to find and I better go and rescue his lordship from the angry midgets.
Rising from the table with her mostly melted iced latte in her hand she smiled mischievously at her friend.
You guys should come for a meal at ours when Travs back. It’ll be fun.
It would be fun, and Travis has missed those dinners. Wait, why am I hunting down a Scotsman?
Because big sister says so and it’ll do you some good……
Maybe...
No maybe about it, honey, he’s the first and only thing I’ve seen make you smile in weeks. Now go have some fun, just keep it PG when you tell me about it later. Some of us have delicate sensibilities, you know.
There was nothing delicate about Eva, and she couldn’t keep up the innocent face for long before it cracked into a grin. With her laughter sounding all too devilish for someone claiming sweetness and light, she left her closest friend with a smile and the demand that she call her later.
Slipping soundlessly into the seat across from her, Eva pushed her sunglasses into her hair. She almost seemed offended by the sunshine at the best of times. Today it was a mere inconvenience. With the barest flicker of her black lined eyes, she takes the woman she thought of as her sister.
