The style of WSX is concentrated on having an intentionally "underground" look, which is represented through the set-up of a ratty ring with no apron and rag-stuffed turnbuckles. Another notable difference between WSX and other wrestling promotions is that WSX will have live bands playing at the start of each episode and band members will join announcers Kris Kloss and Bret Ernst on commentary.
The WSX pilot was taped on February 10, 2006 in Los Angeles, California, and all wrestlers who participated in the first show were forced to sign an agreement stating that they would be part of a whole season if the show happened to be picked up by MTV. Wrestler Delirious refused to sign the agreement. Also, scheduled dark matches were cut in the days leading up to the taping. Despite these setbacks, the pilot featured a "WSX Rumble" (Battle Royal / Tables, Ladders, and Chairs combination) with two contracts hung above the ring to determine who would be in the first ever WSX Heavyweight Championship match. Sean Waltman and Vampiro obtained the contracts, and Black Label Society was the featured band that played during the pilot.
WSX taped its first season of shows between November 11 and November 16, 2006. The tapings were booked by head writer Kevin Kleinrock, Cody Michaels, and Vampiro.
The pilot episode will air on January 30, 2007 at 10:30 pm on MTV, with new 30-minute episodes airing in the same timeslot every Tuesday thereafter. MTV will also be previewing the pilot episode on January 26th at 11:00 pm.
Wrestling Society X on MTV will compete with the second half of Extreme Championship Wrestling, which airs one-hour episodes every Tuesday on Sci-Fi Channel.
