Sitting on the back row of a set of bleachers with his arms resting on his knees is the former multi time World Champion Nathan Williams. The Ring of Honor Icon sits quietly as he watches the group of young men and women off in the distance practing simply things such as bumps and running the ropes. Although his attention is focused on whats going on it's obvious he's not really paying attention.
The sudden raddle of the stands from someone walking up towards him brings him out of his hypnotic trance causing him to lock eyes with Timothy Jones. Nathan motions for the young man to come up and have a seat with him which he does. TJ has a seat next to the Icon who sends his attention once more to the group off in the distance paying no attention to TJ.
TJ: "You alright Nathan?"
No words leave the mouth of the icon as he remains focused.
TJ: "You worried Angel when you just up and ran off like that back there. I told her I figured I knew where you were so I'd come get ya. Guess I was right."
Nathan continues to pay no attention to Timothy who just sits patiently waiting for a response.
TJ: "So I chase you down yet I can't even get a hello out of you?"
Without looking towards TJ Nathan finally opens his mouth.
Nathan: "Hello."
TJ just shakes his head as he looks over towards the crowd.
TJ: "Funny. Perhaps you should be a comedian when you finish wrestling for a living."
TJ looks over at Nathan who is still giving him the silent treatment.
TJ: "Look, when you wanna talk let me know Nathan."
TJ stands up taking one last look towards Nathan before climbing down the bleachers.
Nathan: "Do you remember the first time you stepped foot in this building?"
The odd question causes TJ to stop and turn to look at Nathan in puzzlement.
TJ: "Do what?"
Nathan: "Do you remember the first time you stepped foot in this building? You know, the first time you ever walked in the Trouble Trax."
TJ makes his way back up the bleachers.
TJ: "Considering it wasn't that long ago ya I can. Do you?"
Nathan: "That's the funny part TJ, I never got that chance."
TJ: "What do ya mean you never got that chance?"
Nathan: "I never got the formal training that you, Ronnie, Brian, and so many others got when you broke into this industry. I was thrown right into the thick of things from day one on the notion of sink or swim. It didn't matter whether it was eWo, SLWA, uWu, UwO, or some other company way out in the sticks. For me it was sink or swim, no training."
TJ: "Why?"
Nathan: TJ I started bare knuckle boxing in underground fight clubs when I was like eighteen. I was always fighting in high school so I figured why not get paid for it right? So I took a couple of fights here and there before flying over seas to England and really getting in the mix of things."
"Before long nobody wanted to fight me so I ended up unemployed and broke. I didn't know what to do for money since my only passion was fighting and I couldn't find anyone willing to take me on. Eventually someone threw me a bone and got me into wrestling over in Japan in those vicious death matches you see on DVD sometimes. It paid good money and put food on the table albeit shortened my life by a few years I'm sure."
First the first time since Timothy showed up Nathan finally looks at him.
Nathan: "Before long I had taken all they had to offer and was still standing. Something nobody outside of Japan had ever achieved. I won numerous titles and awards but missed my family back home so I called it quits after a few years and headed back to the states."
"Before I got home my name had already spread like wild flowers and my phone was going off non stop from companys trying to sign me, it was a great feeling."
TJ: 'What does that have to do with anything Nathan?"
Nathan: "Everything. TJ I made my living off of the fact I could fight better than anyone alive. I wasn't a wrestler, I was a fighter plain and simple. I could take as much pain as I could inflict. However back then people assumed if you could fight you could wrestle. Add to the fact I already had a huge following from my days in Japan and I was a huge draw."
"So I signed a big dollar contract upon coming back to the states and was thrown into the main event scene. They didn't send me to train, they didn't give me a couple of easy matches to help get me adjusted, it was right into the main event. I barely knew the difference between a hammer lock and an arm bar yet here I was expected to wrestle a normal match. Not only wrestle a normal match but go for thirty minutes."
Nathan looks back at the class as he watches the instructor comment on what they just did.
Nathan: "I had to learn my craft on the fly, baptism under fire. Every territory I would go to after that was the same situation. Didn't matter whether I was on the east coast or the west, I was in the main event because of what I could bring to the table."
TJ: "What are you getting at Nathan?"
Nathan: "People like Jericho talk about how they came up in this business like I'm supposed to be impressed. As if I'm supposed to fear for my life because of what they did before they were wrestlers or because of how hardcore they can be and have been in the past."
"Fuck them all. They don't know shit about hardcore, they don't know shit about struggles coming up in this business. Despite what Jericho claims he received training before stepping into a real wrestling ring. He was trained how to actually deliver a promo, capture peoples attention with his words and mannerisms, and compete in a wrestling ring before being cut loose on the roster. He was trained for this moment."
Nathan pauses for a moment.
Nathan: "I wasn't trained to step into that ring for a shot at the World Title of any organization. And whereas I may have been thrown into the main event from the start I had to earn my shots at the top straps. I had to prove I could compete with the greatest this business had to offer. And I did just that no matter where I was."
Nathan's voice comes across as if he was getting a little heated.
Nathan: "Fuck Jericho Cross and his constant bull shit nonsense about his past and how extreme he is. You think your life was hard Jericho? You think you had to scratch and claw your way to the top of the pyramid for a shot at greatness? You were trained for a shot at greatness. They taught you the ins and outs so that when your time came you'd be prepared for it."
"If anything Jericho you're a joke. Your fight with Sean was nothing short of a scripted dance routine with weapons. That wasn't extreme, that wasn't anything more than a fucking spot fest. Where did it get you Jericho huh? It got you NOWHERE. Even those priming you for greatness knew your time hadn't come yet. Now look at you, you're knocking on the door of a permanent place in the main event scene. However much like every single time before, you'll knock on the door but that door won't be answered."
"You want a shot at me Jericho? I don't care whether your name is listed as number one contendor to the HKWF World Heavyweight Championship or not. You think you earned that title shot just because you were able to scale a ladder and retrieve a peice of paper with your name on it? I'm not impressed with you, or with your constant babble of nonsense. I pinned your shoulders to the mat in the TRIPLE threat match not a fatal fourway. On your rise back up the rankings you lost to fuckin John Champa in an I Quit match. Yet you still think you should get a shot at me? I'd laugh if I didn't know you were serious. Get in line Jericho.
TJ goes to comment but Nathan stops him before he can.
Nathan: "Then you've got the jack of all screw ups John Champa. The man who claims to be greatness but yet his only title run comes with an asterik. You're a real man John? Much like Jericho you were trained to compete at the top of the pyramid and was even given the key to the city but what did you do? You fucked it up! You screwed yourself over, not Nathaniel Davis, not the booking committee, you."
"You look up transition champion and your face lies there. You could write a novel on paper champions and you alone would take up several chapters. You were never a champion John, you simply held onto the belt and kept it warm while ratings dropped into the negatives. You proved your worth as champion when you refused to defend it at Lord of the Coliseum. You proved that all that training you got was just like you, nothing more than a waste."
"Yet now you want to claim you're at the top of your game, you're at the top of this business? John your own wife doesn't take you serious so why should anyone else? When you lose you claim you let them beat you as if you were back in middle school. John this is the real world, you don't allow people to beat you. People with real talent just do. Big Shot? Big joke."
The class below begins to dismiss but as they exit towards the locker rooms they stop to take notice of Nathan as he continues to rant.
Nathan: "Kid Kaos I'm not done with you yet. You see you took the training you received and unlike the last two you actually did something with it. At Heatwave you took me to hell and back and walked out the champion. I don't dispute that nor am I making any excuses. The better man won that night and I'm mad enough to admit that."
"But you and I still have unfinished business. So long as that World Title rests around your waist I can not and will not back down until I forcefully rip that title from your hand and shatter that glass ceiling over your fucking head. You want to be the greatest of all time? You've got a long way to go before you get to that point in your life. You're taking steps in the right direction but much like the previous two you will screw up. They all do at some point. And I'll be there when you do."
TJ: "What are you driving at?"
Nathan: "This company is ready to be taken over TJ. Its simply looking for someone to step up and take the reigns to guide this company not only back on track, but into the future."
"John Champa, Jericho Cross, and Kid Kaos can claim all day long that they will be the ones who lead this company into the future but it's not gonna happen. They can barely guide their own careers much less lead an entire company such as GZW."
"It's time TJ. It's time we put our plan into motion and execute it. It's time to take no prisoners and leave nothing left standing. It's time."
TJ: "You sure Nathan? I figured we still had some more planning left."
Nathan: "TJ you've gotten more training then I ever got from some of the greatest to ever stand in this ring. The time for planning and talking are over. The time for action is now. Call everyone up because it's time to go to war."
TJ nods his head as he heads bleachers pulling his cellphone out of his pocket. Once out of earshot Nathan grabs his cellphone and pulls it from his pocket dialing a quick number.
Nathan: "You ready to go? It's time to put the plan into motion. It's time for war."
Nathan ends the call and slips the phone back into his pocket as the scene fades.
