When Paul Garner and Masatoshi Tanaka were asked who they would like to answer the open challenge, broadcast today from an earlier recording, one rather surprising answer was their predecessors, Vintage Gold. When pressed, they had this to say:
"Well, it's not about being easy targets, just so we're clear" said a rather casual Garner, best known as Cruxis. "It's not about beating up on two old men or anything like that. They were the tag team title holders before us and they were meant to be defending against us, but couldn't due to injury."
Garner actually praised the team of Clancy Beauregarde and partner Captain All-Star.
"They held the championship, which tells me they've still got it, so to speak. To me, they'd still be quite a challenge. Being as experienced as they are, there's no doubt they'd have a few tricks up their sleeve, maybe something old school that the newer generation would be unfamiliar with. Basically, there's still a lot to learn from the old guard and I, for one, would like to see how we'd fare in that type of match."
Partner and friend Tanaka-aka Kemuri-had some opinions on the matter himself.
"We think it would be fair and also sporting to extend them an invitation to challenge for these titles as we would have met were they not attacked and injured by certain members of Prime Time. We were looking forward to the match we earned with them and it would be nice to see just how we could have done against those veterans. For us, it's all about past versus present and what it means to have the two meet. It's been seen before many times, but we want to experience that for ourselves and again, we think it would be fair to them. If they hadn't the ability to keep up with the performers of today, they would never have won in the first place. We want them to put us through our paces as much as we would do for them."
"We'd approach the idea with respect" offered Garner. "Just because you're in The Scourge, doesn't mean you have to hate everyone. We can be ourselves and as such, we're free to show that respect to anyone we feel deserves it and they definitely do. We just want to see how things may have played out and win or lose, I think we could learn something from the encounter. Training all the time makes you fit and well-prepared, but you don't get better without learning some new things."
When asked if they thought the team would accept the challenge or if it would even be allowed to go through, they had little to offer in response:
"Well, we haven't seen them since they were taken out by Vanderbilt and later, Dark Star" said Kemuri. "If they feel like returning from injury, they will and if not, that's their decision. We can't force them, which is why it's an invitation and not a challenge in the strictest sense of the word. We can only put it out there and see what happens and that's what we've done in this discussion."
Cruxis seemed to be in agreement with his partner's assessment.
"He's right, all we can do is make an offer. After that, the ball is in their court. Taking on two veterans with that level of experience would be a dream and if that's all it will remain, then so be it. I'm pretty sure we'll be kept busy either way because we don't intend for our titles to go anywhere"
