Long-term GZW2K1 punching bag Willie Haire has apparently signed with United Japan Wrestling and is set for a legit push. The Irishman – widely considered a lingering bad joke within GZG – has reportedly spent the last two years undergoing intensive training at GZW’s Trouble Trax facility, and is said to have surpassed the level required for televised competition. With ten years experience in the industry, he is certainly no rookie, though UJW management are looking to sever any ties between the man (real name William McDonald) and his previous on-screen persona. Somehow we doubt the slack-jawed, stereotypical Irishman-with-an-unhealthy-obsession-with-roof-tiles shtick would translate well to the oriental market.
Upcoming event listings for the Japanese promotion bill him as “WMD” Will McDonald, and rumour has it he is to play the role of a destructive, monster heel. We here at Dirt have our doubts as to whether McDonald will be able to make the successful transition from developmental talent to top-flight wrestler – and indeed if the shrewd UJW audience will even be able to take him seriously. We also wonder if it’s a coincidence that his debut comes as GZW2K1 Icon Nathan Williams is in pursuit of the UJW Superheavyweight Championship – Let’s not forget that it was Willie and Nazal Haire that pulled off perhaps the upset of 2001 when they defeated Williams and fellow Icon Sincere for the World Tag Team Championships. That loss proved quite a bitter pill for “T-Rex” to swallow, and we must wonder if McDonald’s sudden appearance in Japan will have any effect on Williams’ title chase.
Clancy McClean has confirmed via Facebook that he will be involved in the upcoming Tenth Anniversary edition of HotWire Magazine. He claims that he will serve as ‘Special Guest Co-Editor’, though we have been unable to get confirmation of this from anybody at HotWire. Other big names circulating for heavy involvement with the project include BDR, Chris Cairns, Sweet Cheapshots, Addison Clark, Quake and Lord Leon Corbin – all of whom have had something to do with the publication in the past. Expect some sort of official announcement soon.
