Name: Cruxis
Real Name: Paul Garner
Height: 6'
Weight: 245 lbs
DoB: 3rd July ‘84
From: Originally from Doncaster, England.
Alignment: Tweener
Theme Music: Metallica’s cover of Enrico Morricone’s “The Ecstasy of Gold”.
Entrance Description: The lights dim considerably without going out completely as the intro to The Ecstasy of Gold rings out, slowly building up as the sound of guitar comes in. As a sustained note hangs in the air, the drums come in fast and out walks the mysterious Cruxis, head still swathed in bandages. He stops momentarily at the top of the ramp, looking out at the fans, his head slowly turning as his gaze sweeps over the arena. He then walks down the ramp with a purpose, his stare seems never to leave the ring as he approaches it and steps up onto the apron. Entering through the ropes, he walks to the nearest corner, climbs to the second turnbuckle and stands up straight, gazing out at the people, whose reactions are mixed at best. Stepping down, he turns to face the inside of the ring and removes his duster and stands there, unwavering as he awaits the bell.
Style: Paul Garner, aka Cruxis, was a wrestling trainee who was desperately trying to get into GZW, though his lack of variety in his movelist caused him to be rejected. As Cruxis, he used the techniques and wrestling holds taught to him by Jericho Cross, who needed someone to carry out his work while he recovered from injury and illness that came about in the plane crash. Paul’s own moveset is now vastly improved, no longer needing to rely on his mentor’s finishers and fighting style to make a name for himself.
Movelist:
Strikes
Headbutt
Elbows
Punches- to the body, face and head
Kicks- to the knees, sides, sternum, chest, ribs, face and head. Many variants.
Clothesline
Submissions
Cobra clutch
Kata hajime
Dragon sleeper
Fujiwara armbar
Cross armbreaker
Crossface Chickenwing
Torture Rack
Technical moves
Cruxis utilises a lot of joint locks and throws to counter incoming blows and slow down an opponent’s momentum. He will sometimes, to toy with an opponent, allow them to attack him so that he can humiliate them with a planned counterattack. Below are some more mundane moves he uses.
Fisherman suplex
Vertical suplex
Snap suplex
German suplex
Back drop
Arm drag
Is able to chain wrestle
Samoan drop
Belly to belly suplexes
Side suplex
Russian leg sweep
Facebuster
Jawbreaker (reversal)
Grounded moves
Leg drop
Knee drop
Elbow drop
See submissions
Other Moves:
Shining Wizard
Trademarks:
Test of Will- Paul forces his opponent onto their knees, stands on the sides of their feet (causing them to twist slightly) as he locks in a full nelson. The pressure is focused on the ankles and shoulders.
Malleus Maleficarum (If used while in Germany, it is known as Hexenhammer)- Evenflow DDT
Under Wraps- Sleeper hold into a back stabber, keeping the sleeper applied.
Finishers:
Test of Resolve- Razor’s (or Outsider’s) Edge
The Unknown- Pepsi Plunge (pedigree off the top turnbuckle)
Attire: Cruxis wears bandages that cover his entire head, allowing his eyes and mouth to show and nothing more. He normally wears a dark brown duster, black gloves, dark blue or black bottoms with black boots and a plain black t-shirt..
Personality: Mostly quiet, though with a short temper. His wrath in invariably swift and terrible, though if one leaves him alone, he will likewise leave them. This is partly due to his job as an effective decoy, tricking others into believing he was Raze. In truth, he was merely trained by the former Extreme Triple Crown champion. Paul himself is observant, innovative and eager to fight. He spends much of his time wandering around, keeping his ears and eyes peeled for anything he can learn from or about.
Bio: Paul Garner struggled to make it as a wrestler in the UK, but when he did, he loved it. He felt that he should try his hand at doing it on the big stage. Saving all the money he could (no mean feat), he raised enough to travel to the States, where he threw himself into the independent circuit, working all the nights he could. Submitting a tape to Alexander Hunt, he was unhappy to learn that GZW2K1 felt his repertoire was too limited. Not one to give up, he kept trying to add new moves to his list, but was still lacking something.
His luck changed for the better, however, courtesy of perhaps the unlikeliest source there was; Jericho Cross. Under The Dread King’s watchful eye, Garner trained in more than wrestling, as Raze imparted some of his martial arts knowledge and extreme style. Things were slow at first, due to Cross’ health not being its best at the time and Garner suffered horrendous beatings in order to toughen him up. While under this new training regimen, he was also forced to face his fears, not being allowed to pass his training until he overcame them all.
Paul’s initial stint as Cruxis was to serve as a decoy, carrying out Jericho’s tasks while he recovered from his injuries. After certain developments, Jericho pulled the plug on their operation, having Garner unmask himself. Since then, he has kept the attire and moniker, taking a liking to an intimidating look to go with his new hybrid style.
Advantages:
With his extensive combat training, Cruxis can counter many holds and his resourcefulness helps him turn bad situations in his favour.
He seems to know a way to get into the heads of each opponent, as if he was familiar with them. This is due to the prolonged periods of study, watching as many tapes as he could obtain, taking notes and learning them by heart.
Tough. He can absorb inhuman punishment and still be looking to give some back, a trait taught to him (very harshly) by his mentor.
Disadvantages:
Likes to analyse foes in the ring perhaps too much sometimes. While thinking up new ways to counter, he may inadvertently give his opponent time to build momentum.
Doesn’t know when to quit- he would rather take on a group of people single-handed, and lose, than flee. This is an unfortunate side-effect to his additional training.
Has an odd sense of honour. He will not raise a weapon to an opponent until they have done so first. In matches that have no DQ, he is more eager, but his preference for his opponent to also be armed may present a problem.
