*Ring Ring*
"Hello?"
"Hey, sweetie, this is Kandi."
"Hi mum, how are you?"
"I'm doing good...always could be better. How's the weather over there?"
"Anyway you want it to be. You know how it is. Been hot the past week, cool today."
"Of course of course..."
"Weather is the least of anyone's problems though. If this is about any hostility towards Joy in the upcoming match, it'll be okay. She's a team mate and will be treating as such. I promise.
"Hmm...this isn't about that...I honestly didn't even know anything about that, sweetie."
"Ohh..."
"There has been talk over at the Command Suite concerning the health of Eva."
"Mm...what about her health?"
"You tell me, Leon....is Eva okay?"
"Honestly? No...but it won't last long..."
"Has she...she...done away with it already?"
"She told you she was pregnant?"
There's a pause.
"She wanted to keep it quiet but I guess she had to speak to someone. She's not gone yet but she's made it clear that she will, mum."
"No she hasn't said a thing to me about it but you know how hard it is to keep things secret from the Command Suite....they have nothing confirmed but did receive an unknown call about it. Ms. Taylor was kind enough to call me once she heard about it."
"I see...then like I said, it's just a temporary thing. She has an appointment coming up soon of which she will take care of the matter..."
"It's not my place but Leon you guys can't do this...this is your flesh and blood....it's not right..."
"I have to support her. It's selfish of me to want something she doesn't when she always said she never wanted children. What can I do?"
"So you do want to have the baby?"
He pauses again. This time long enough for the woman to think he may have even disappeared until there is a sniff.
"Yes...Yes, I do. Why wouldn't I want a child with the woman I'm married to and in love with?"
"So why in the hell is Eva doing this?!"
"There are several reasons in reality. One, it wasn't planned. Two, she doesn't want children of her own. But three, she has her career to think about as well. I can't expect her to give that all up for something she doesn't want. I can't bear the thought of her resenting me down the line either."
"I think that's bullshit....clear and utter bullshit! It shouldn't matter if it is planned or not....it happened. Ruth and Mason weren't planned but you didn't see me wanting to abort them! You weren't planned but Jay and your father didn't abort you! Don't even start about the career as you're talking to someone that has balanced both..."
"I know this. On the flipside though, you had my siblings quite late in life compared to this? She's also not like my mother who had me to feel close to Dad. I mean that not as a dig but the truth. Who knows that Evalyn may change her mind and maybe this just isn't the right time. I have to respect her choices. I would never force her to do something against her grain."
"I hate to say this...even think it...but is there a chance the baby isn't yours?"
"If this is to do with Rupert's ridiculous stunt some months ago, it's just that. I have no reason to believe my wife has cheated on me much less be daft enough not to use protection in such an event. Fact is, we have had the discussion of children on more than one occasion and every time she has said it's not something she would ever do."
"Well that's good to hear because I love Eva and would never want to think she would cheat in her marriage. But, Leon, this is not right...just not right..."
"Then what should I do?"
"Fight for your child."
"What more can I do? I have begged and pleaded, tried to put across the benefits, the feeling of further intimacy within our family, all of it. She knows it hurts me and I believe it hurt her to a point as well but what are my options from here? I can't pressure her. It would just push her away if I did."
"But by her aborting it will push you away...make you resent her."
"It's my duty as a husband to support her through thick and thin, is it not? She couldn't push me away, Not after everything we have been through."
"You need to get Constance on your side. There is no way in the world that old woman would want Eva to have an abortion."
"There will be no time. She's away on a cruise and not due back for a few weeks yet. Evalyn will have already dealt with the issue by then."
"Maybe she'll listen to both Jay and me...even get James in on this?"
"Have you even heard from mum? Because she's still not responding to me."
"I haven't...in a situation like this though I am more than sure she will come out of where ever she is hiding..."
"I don't even know why she would be hiding anyway. But I don't want Evalyn to feel forced. If she wanted a baby, it would have to be because it's what she wanted to do, not because people are coming crashing down on her."
"This all just so asinine..."
"Perhaps. But if you asked me some years ago about children, I would have had the same opinion as her. I mean, she's great with the kids but they're not hers and that seems to suit her fine."
"You're talking as if...the girl is not thinking about getting pregnant...she is pregnant!"
"And maybe that is why her first reaction is to fix the problem before it can escalate."
There is a loud audible exhale from The Phoenix's end of the line.
"Ultimately this is not something I have to directly deal with...if this is what the two of you have decided upon so be it. You know I'll love both of you the same regardless."
"Just like I will love her regardless. But this is not my decision."
"You are her husband...she is your wife...it is as much as your decision as it's hers, sweetie."
"Mm...we'll find a way, I'm sure..."
"I'm sure you will...I'll definitely pray on it."
"Well, we have survived worse...I'm sure we can get through this too, ay?"
"Yes I'm sure."
The normally confident voice of Kandi Fortune-Corbin isn't so confident.
"I'll talk to you later, sweetie...send Eva my love and make sure your father is wearing his heavy coat over there."
"I will. You take care...oh...Mum? Can you please keep this between us? It's just I don't want people to know anything, especially not as it is right now. I trust you so..."
"Leon...I...I'll keep it between us for now."
"Thank you...I really appreciate it."
"Love you."
"I love you too. Bye..."
