It's that time of year again where the temperature within the GroundZero Globalverse rises to dramatic levels, the Globalstars getting set to travel the rocky road once more to Heatwave. Traditionally one of the most eventful extravaganzas on the GZW2K1 calendar, here are some early news and rumour tidbits concerning this year's pay-per-view:
We have it on very good authority that the GZW2K1 Creative Team are looking to bring in Icon Lord John Taylor as a key 'special attraction' for this year's event. His in-ring days well and truly behind him, it is believed that the Creative Team are looking for Taylor to come in and be a special guest announcer for the entire duration of the Heatwave VIII pay-per-view, setting up a four man booth alongside regular announcers; Patrick Nelson, Joshua Samson and Todd Crumb. As of this moment in time, we understand that GZW2K1 has not formally approached John Taylor with regards to this role.
Heated Analysis: We think it would be a major coup for GZW2K1 to have Icon Taylor agree to joining the regular announce team for one night only. Taylor is a terrific talker who many felt was inevitably destined to continue with GZW2K1 as an announcer following his retirement, and it would be great to see how he effects the dynamics of the popular 'Three Stooges.' Having Icon Taylor announcing at ringside would certainly have a positive impact on buy rates, and you have to believe he'd end up getting involved with at least one or two old rivals from the past.
A recent Creative Team meeting had a "Blast From Our Past" Battle Royale be pitched, which has apparently been given the green light, assuming GZW2K1 can sign enough high-calibur former Globalstars to a "one night" deal. The Battle Royale would be a nostalgic trip down memory lane as a host of high-profile (and obscure) names battle it out one more time. A whole host of names including Icon Pimp Bizkit and Icon Billy Bond have been thrown around as possible combatants. With this being their tenth anniversary year, GZW2K1 is understandably high on nostalgia at the moment, and it is believed that this Battle Royale would be a terrific and brief way to deliver a 'special attraction' match at Heatwave VIII.
Heated Analysis: We're not sure what to make of this one. GZW2K1 would have to be careful that this 'nostalgic attraction' does not overshadow current Globalstars at Heatwave VIII. This would surely be counter-productive to efforts whereby we assume GZW2K1 wants to use Heatwave VIII to build new stars. Ideally, this match - if it happens - would be a brief jaunt down memory lane, whilst leaving the night's serious business to the current crop of Globalstars.
Makura-Gaeshi, a masked 'demon' character who has been showing up in vignettes in recent months, is reportedly now a project which has stalled indefinitely. Makura was apparently set to be the masked alter-ego for Bane whilst GZW2K1 tours the Far East. Bane is currently injured however, and very likely to miss the entirety of the Summer Heat Tour.
Heated Analysis: Bane's age and proneness to injury are big factors into why he has failed to receive a prolonged push in GZW2K1. Bane has barely appeared on GZW2K1 television since winning the 'Cash The Cheque' Ladder Match at Aftermath2K10.
'Fire' and 'destruction' are two words which sum up the imagery GZW2K1 traditionally uses to promote the Heatwave pay-per-views, but this year the entire mood and feel of the big Summer event is said to be due for a 'massive overhaul.' The GZW2K1 Creative Team are said to be high on creating a 'sunny and positive' marketing campaign for the event, which is a stark contrast to past campaigns which have included elaborate video packages of Hong Kong being destroyed by giant balls of fire, pay-per-view posters which seem to use 'Hell' as their theme, and pay-per-view theme music which has typically consisted of heavy metal or dramatic orchestra scores. GZW2K1 are especially keen to increase their teenage girl fan base.
Heated Analysis: Sounds like a good move to freshen up the overall feel of Heatwave, which has trodden the same familiar path of 'fire and brimstone' over the course of a decade. We're not entirely sure what to expect from GZW2K1 but it sounds like they're aiming to create a Summer 'feel-good' event.
2004 LORD OF THE COLISEUM TO BE SPECIAL GUEST ANNOUNCER?

GZW2K1 LOOKING TO SHAKE UP THE HEATWAVE THEME THIS YEAR?
