Canadian Stampede Wrestling (CSW) issued a statement this morning that former Canadian Heavyweight Champion Hank Hennessy, aka “Big Meat”, has been released. A spokesperson claimed that the company had “exhausted all disciplinary avenues” in regard to a lengthy series of “serious incidents” involving the wrestler, and that “regrettably, releasing Hennessy was [their] last remaining option.” An inside source tells us here at Dirt that the company has actually been looking to get rid of Hennessy for at least two years and that he has been nothing but trouble.
Hennessy has been suspended from CSW over ten times, once famously for exposing himself to a female referee live on the air. The straw that broke the camel’s back came at last night’s television recording when Hennessy – at this point already under suspension – interrupted a Canadian Heavyweight title match between Jacob Saigon and Desolate Mu. The run-in was unsanctioned and saw Hennessy do quite a number on the guys in the ring before supposedly urinating on the title belt itself. Hennessy was removed, given his marching orders and the match was restarted; that one definitely won’t be going on the air.
Where Hennessy will go from here is entirely up in the air. GZW2K1 (who issued him with a lifetime ban following an incident backstage at Heatwave I in 2001) have reportedly seen the potential of putting “Big Meat” and his old drinking buddy turned bitter rival James “Monarch” Corbin on television together, though whether this would involve any actual wrestling is hard to say. There’s supposedly always a home for Hennessy at HKWF, too, so at this point it’s anybody’s guess.
The ongoing Trouble Trax tournament was originally supposed to see a Bane versus Quarrie-Naughton Caprice final, a little bird tells us, though Caprice’s ties to Billy Diamond-Remarkable have proven to be something of a burden as plans were changed. Trouble Trax officials, like most in the Globalverse, have no great love for BDR and felt his presence took away from the prestige of the tournament itself. Caprice was initially planned to go over his father at Honorbound and then join the GZW2K1 roster proper, though with both men out of the tournament it looks as though he will join the main roster even sooner than that.
The idea of a Bane/QNC match happening at Honorbound is still on the table, however, and BDR is said to be pushing hard for it. His idea is to promote it as the “real” final to the Trouble Trax tournament. Whether he’ll get his wish is hard to say at this point.
On the topic of the Trouble Trax, it is said that a number of trainers, including Tonya Glory and Jericho “Raze” Cross, are unhappy that new signing Daasu has been bumped straight to the main roster, bypassing the academy altogether. Glory, who is fluent in Japanese, feels that Daasu is currently too raw for the big stage and feels that six months spent at the Trouble Trax working with her would iron out any problems in terms of mic skills or actual in-ring ability. Cross, no stranger to extreme wrestling, has stressed that without the proper training, Daasu – who has never wrestled professionally before and comes from a street-fighting background – will injure herself sooner rather than later. Their concerns have fallen on deaf ears, however, as the booking committee are said to be extremely excited about their newest star and are looking to get her involved as soon as is possible.
Eva Hikari is quietly pushing for Davina Cameron to be excluded from this year’s Lord of the Coliseum tournament. While the two have their personal differences – to put it mildly – the reasoning behind it seems to be that Eva is intent on remaining the only Lady of the Coliseum in order to stand out from the increasingly competitive female pack. Eva’s say will no doubt go a long way in its own right, but if she can get her politically powerful husband and father-in-law on side, Davina may well be blackballed. Months away from the tournament and Davina is currently 2/1 favourite to win according to PaddyPower.com.
Speaking of Davina, Parents Against GZW filed a formal complaint this week with the FCC regarding a recent promo during which the reigning GZW2K1 Women’s Champion prominently smoked a cigarette. A PAG spokesperson said the lobby group had flagged the promo as highly inappropriate due to its sending out dangerous mixed signals to young fans who may associate Davina’s beauty and professional success with smoking. The group have demanded that GZW2K1 remove the promo from its On Demand service and have it replaced with a vignette of Davina – more suitably dressed – outlining the dangers of cigarette smoking. That seems likely.
The FCC last week set up a special, round-the-clock task force dedicated to sorting through and investigating complaints lodged against Clancy McClean’s IGW programming. Good luck to them.
Long-serving GZW2K1 Senior Interviewer Weston Bentley had to be talked out of quitting his job following his recent on-air “Diamond in the Rough” skits with Billy Diamond-Remarkable. The universally respected Bentley was said to be unhappy with his treatment from BDR, feeling humiliated and ashamed to be a part of it. The skits have received large viewing figures, however, and BDR is clearly involved with something backstage and as such will receive no disciplinary action. Bentley was apparently given a substantial pay increase for his troubles.
Recent, scarily high viewing figures for indy promotions Insane Gods of Wrestling (IGW) and Creation Wrestling II (CWII) have apparently piqued the interest of Ground Zero Global Broadcasting executives. Many within GZG feel the small feds’ output is juvenile, low brow and of questionable entertainment value and should be kept as far away from primetime GZG broadcasting as possible. However, the prospect of a GZG-sanctioned, inter-fed “supershow” is reportedly being heavily considered. The ratings for both feds are astronomical at the moment and it is felt that this needs to be capitalised on. The idea is bound to leave a sour taste in more than a few mouths, although the feeling is that such a show would draw in huge numbers for the GZG network in the run-up to the fall schedule whilst providing some light relief around the time of the generally very serious Lord of the Coliseum tournament. Neither Chris Cairns nor Clancy McClean have been available for comment, though if you want our dirty two cents, this will go the way of the Hotwire Tenth Anniversary Special...
