"The Demon Tormentor of Sleeping Souls" was one of the major storylines pitched for the 2011 GZW2K1 Summer Heat Tour. A horrifying, dastardly demon known as Makura-Gaeshi would surface as soon as GZW2K1 reached the Far East, destroying all Globalstars in its path and leaving destruction and devestation in its wake.
In Japanese mythology, the Makura-Gaeshi ("pillow-mover") is a soul-stealing prankster known for moving pillows around while people sleep.
The man behind the mask would be none other than current GZW2K1 World Heavyweight Champion, Bane. This would never be outright revealed or mentioned by the announcers, but it would doubtless be common knowledge to all but the very most casual of fans.
The elaborate gimmick would rely muchly on smoke and mirrors and 'supernatural happenings' in order to wow fans, all while breathing new life into Bane, the Globalstar, by adding this Summertime-only alterego to the big man's repertoire.
The idea was to re-feud with 2009 rival Eva Hikari, who Bane feuded with for much of the 2009 Summer Heat Tour, this 'darker' Makura-Gaeshi character aiming to finally send Eva into a tormented slumber for all eternity.
As it happens, things didn't quite work out. The costume was set. The theme music was set (see below), but something just didn't feel right for GZW2K1 Creative. The mask had complicated lights shining out of its eyes which supposedly were proving unreliable, and the mask itself was made from ridiculously heavy oak.
In reality? Bane would simply appear in the closing minutes of 2011's Heatwave Eight pay-per-view and cash in his cheque (won at Aftermath2K10), failing in his bid to become GZW2K1 World Heavyweight Champion.
Had the gimmick been greenlit, who knows what the end result may have been?
