Vice-President Devotion Profit-Lord walked out onto the stage in Kowloon park, greeted by the clicking and beeping of numerous cameras as she took her seat. She pulled the microphone towards her and tapped it twice, producing an echo and a squeak.
Devotion: Thank you all for coming… I’m going to make an announcement, and then there will be time for questions after that.
The cameras clicked away as she pulled her glasses out of her pocket and put them on. She picked up a piece of paper from the table and read it quickly, then looked up at the gathered journalists.
Devotion: As you know, Heatwave XII is fast approaching, and Ring of Honor Icon Lady Eva “Nemesis” Hikari has no challenger for the Intercontinental Championship.
More flashes and clicks
Devotion: Many options were considered, but for business purposes we wanted to hold out for something special. To that end, I reached out to a Globalstar who has been on a personal leave of absence for some time. I am pleased to report as of yesterday, that he has agreed to face Icon Lady Hikari for the Intercontinental Championship at Heatwave XII.
She looked up and smiled.
Devotion: So, to that end, please welcome the “Iconic Dynamite”, Ring of Honor Icon Lord Jon H Kellar.
The assembled crowd of journalists and reporters rose and applauded as the 3x World Champion stepped out onto the stage, decked out in one of his trademark hooded t-shirts and jeans. He smiled an uneasy smile and made his way over to Devotion, shaking her hand politely and taking a seat next to her.
Icon Kellar: Thank you.
Devotion: Okay, we’ll take a few questions.
A sea of hands rose, and she picked one with a point of her finger. The other journalists sat down.
Journalist: Icon Kellar, you’ve been off the radar for almost a year, why return now?
Kellar opened his mouth to answer.
Devotion: Can I be clear before Icon Kellar answers. Icon Kellar has been on a personal leave of absence. The door has always been open for him to return.
Icon Kellar: Yes, and I’m grateful for GZW2K1 for their support over the past year, and to the Globalverse in general. I just feel ready to come back now, which I haven’t before. My mind has been… elsewhere…
Journalist: Is there any connection to your well documented financial problems since your falling out with UltiMight Media’s CEO James Wilson?
Icon Kellar: I won’t deny that there’s a monetary element to my decision, but don’t for one second think I’m coming here just to pick up a paycheck. I’m here to win, just like always.
Kellar sighed, even he didn’t believe that. If he could have gotten the money another way he’d be at home in front of his own television right now, instead of everyone elses’
Devotion: Next question.
Journalist: Should you win the Intercontinental Title, will you take it to COMPETE?
Icon Kellar: No. COMPETE is, sadly, a shadow of what it should be.
Journalist: Following on from that, Vice President Devotion, when Icon Kellar was last here he threatened to embarrass the company and steal the World title. How can you trust him?
Devotion: Icon Kellar has never hesitated to express himself, which is why he is a popular Globalstar. Trying to control him is not good for business, though I’m confident I can manage him.
Icon Kellar: Don’t count on it.
Everyone laughed, except Kellar. Devotion pointed to the next journalist.
Journalist: Will you seek a rematch with Sean Locke, or a World Title shot against the winner of the Highway to Hell match?
Seriously? The match hadn’t even started yet and they were asking about future opponents.
Icon Kellar: Let’s take it one match at a time, shall we? All I will say about the Highway to Hell match is that I’m really looking forward to seeing it.
Journalist: Who do you think will win?
Icon Kellar: If I don’t say Leon then he will never let me hear the end of it… so Leon.
Devotion: Next.
Journalist: You’ve got an impressive record at Heatwave, four wins in five appearances. Does that give you a mental edge?
Icon Kellar: You’re only as good as your next match. Whether I beat Zander Frost or not doesn’t affect whether I’ll beat Eva. I need to prepare properly.
Journalist: Are you looking forward to seeing Joshua Samson?
The assembled guests laughed. Kellar allowed himself a smile at the thought of hearing his old nemesis again.
Icon Kellar: Oh I can’t wait… I bet he’s looked up 100 new clichés since I’ve been away.
Devotion: Okay… one last question.
Journalist: Icon Lord Kellar, I hate to say it but, you’ve been out of the ring for a year, you haven’t held championship gold since 2003 and in your last bid to take gold Sean Locke completely overpowered you. Do you really think you can take the title from Lady Eva?
Kellar smiled, again, uneasily.
Icon Kellar: We’ll see… won’t we?
Devotion: Okay everyone, if everyone could come forward with their cameras now.
The masses rose and made their way towards the table as she produced the contract from her briefcase and slid it across the table towards Kellar. She handed him a silver fountain pen, and Kellar flipped over the first few pages, signing at the bottom.
A quick “signing” pose for the camera, and his fate was sealed.
For better for worse, he was back.
