Munin grinned in amusement as the man across from her winced at the taste of his unsweetened hot green tea.
She pushed a small glass jar of honey towards her companion.
Munin: So stubborn, I told you it would go better with honey.
She leaned against the retracted rain door, and looked out over the back garden. It was a beautiful breezy afternoon, and the perfect time for tea. Tea and trying to talk sense into stubborn men.
Tamer smirked and eyed Munin as he added honey to his tea. He attempted to add enough to make it drinkable, but not enough to seem childish or overtly American.
Tamer: Thank you for inviting me over. This place really is beautiful...
He looked out over the lush green traditional gardens as he said this. The only colors that could be seen other than greens were the vibrant glass lanterns that dotted the paths here and there. He could imagine how enchanting they would be when lit at dusk. The faint sound of water trickling could be heard from somewhere out of sight.
Munin: Thank you I inherited it from my great uncle. So tell me...
She watched him carefully, as he took a tentative sip of his tea once more.
He seemed to find it better to his taste, and she waited till he had swallowed before continuing.
Munin: How long are you planning to go through with your little charade?
Tamer became alert at once, pulled out of the peaceful lull brought on by his surroundings. He gave Munin a very intent with his gaze steadily holding her own. He calmly took another sip of his, and used the moment to collect his thoughts for conversation that lay ahead.
Tamer: I am not entirely sure what you mean.
His answer seemed amuse her judging by the small smile that quirked the corner of her mouth. She wasn't about to let him off the hook so easily though, and her next words were spoken with a smokey western drawl.
Munin: Well partner for some reason I highly doubt that.
Tamer smirked and took another sip of tea to hide it. For the first time he suspected that he knew why Munin so often had tea when having tricky conversations or interviews.
It made an awesome diversion to compose, and gather your thoughts. It was a tool he was all too happy to use, because he had no intention to give answers or have an honest conversation.
Tamer: Not bad... Strangely alluring even. Are you by chance auditioning for a GZW Films Western?
A smirk spread on her full glossed lips at his snark.
So he wanted to play games did he?
This time she did not wait for him to swallow his tea.
Munin: No I'll just save it for Jericho in the bedroom. Do you think he could borrow your duster and hat?
Her efforts paid off when he coughed slightly on his drink.
Tamer: Duster and hat... Not sure if I have one. Trying to dress Jericho up like me?
He wiped his mouth with a napkin, and did his best to keep the chuckle out of his voice.
Munin: Are you saying that you've recently worn a duster and cowboy hat?
He rested one of his elbows on his knee with a smile, while taking a purposeful sip of his tea.
Tamer: I'm from Arizona I'm sure I've worn a cowboy hat at some point in my life... Just like you've probably been caught in a kimono a time or two.
Her look clearly said touche, as she was in fact wearing a simple faded green cotton kimono.
Munin: You do have a point...So tell me have you been keeping up with the promos on GZW lately?
She was undeterred in her efforts though it was clear that she may need to change tactics.
She flipped her thick black braid over her shoulder, and waited for him to make his next move.
Tamer: I haven't. Really no point is there? That place chewed me up and spit me out.
Munin: Ah well it's likely for the best that you don't. I wouldn't be surprised if Kolic didn't get some surprise title match at the next show.
Tamer scoffed and had to stop himself from accidentally breaking the delicate cup in his hand. He had to hand it to her that one had definitely hit a nerve. He looked into his now empty cup, and then back at Munin. For that moment though he couldn't see her as just her. He saw her as a representation of all the things he wanted to forget had gone wrong but couldn't.
He lashed out verbally it was something he would likely regret later, but at the time he found it impossible to think past the present...and the past.
Tamer: Sounds about right. So why am I here Munin? I'm forcefully retired... So I can't help you with any GZW2K1 business. You've got a boy toy, so I doubt you're trying to seduce me with green tea...
For a moment one could almost swear that the air around them noticeably dropped. Munin slowly bestowed the man across from her with a look that could only be described as fridged.
Munin: So odd, I never thought the man who proclaimed himself to be an American hero...to behave so crassly. Tell me do you think it appropriate to come into someone's home as guest, and tell them that your first assumption for them to invite you...
The edge of her voice sharpened noticeably as she spoke, but her voice demeanour remained composed.
Munin: They either want to use you or get into your pants? Do you often refer to their significant others as toys?
Instead of rising in volume her voice became softer, and some how that gave off more danger than shouting ever could have.
Munin:I will say this only once. You will not talk to me as if I am some indy Diva getting ahead in the company on my knees, I am one of the best wrestlers in the business. I have toppled men that many consider giants. I am LADY Munin for a reason, and only one other woman in this company has won the same title. You will not demean my accomplishments or my relationship with Jericho in my own home.
Methodically she poured herself another cup of tea, and carried on as if she were merely commenting on the weather.
Munin: I invited you here because as I previously stated I am wondering how long you will continue this cowboy act, instead of taking on your own name. I am concerned about you Jo-
Tamer shook his head incredulously at her words. Yes they were true, and she had every right to say them. Part of him knew that, but with toxic storm of emotions and adrenalin pumping through him...it was so much easier to go with anger.
Tamer: So you're what... In love with the man that sent the group of thugs that nearly paralyzed someone you consider family? The group that tipped Kolic over the edge and caused him to throw his life into ruin. The Group that tried to end your career and did end mine! Why the hell would I give you any answers! I came here on the pretext that a friend wanted to chat and catch up.
Tamer stands clearly exacerbated by the situation and conversation.
Tamer: But it's been clear from the beginning that you had an ulterior motive. I'm not your friend Munin, you've made that pretty clear. But I'm also not your pawn. So excuse me for not playing your games like a little puppy like Hugin, Cross, Kellar, and now Jericho. I respect you as an equal, but you clearly don't see me as one... I'm not a plaything for your amusement.
His words were desperately savage, but if he had hoped to incite an equally venomous response he was disappointed. Munin continued to study him calmly, and was secretly proud of herself for not dislocating one of his ribs.
Munin: Where to begin? Clan Mayhem didn't push Kolic over the edge, he has been heading towards it for sometime. Nobody forced him to do anything he has done, he made those decisions all on his own. Just as you have made the choice to talk to me the way you currently are.
She added a spoon of honey to her tea without breaking eye contact. This was not the Tamer she was used to, and it would be foolish to take her eyes from him.
Munin: As for my relationship it is none of your damn business, but as far as him and Mayhem... Eva forgave him for his involvement, and so have I. He acknowledged his mistake, and came back to help fix it. I just happened to speed up that process exponentially.
The look on his face, as she stoically laid out the unpleasant truths of their conversation, was a twist of pain and fury. Tamer was like a wounded animal, and it tugged at her heart. She wasn't about to let him or anyone else speak to her in such a manner, but she felt for him. If she didn't he wouldn't have been invited, and he definitely wouldn't still be standing on her porch.
Munin: Now please do tell, exactly how have I used you or tried to use you thus far? I'm also interested in how I have used any of the before mentioned men?
She shook her head, and her dark eyes thawed slightly. Despite the fact that Tamer's eyes were still filled with a fury that seemed unnatural in his typically calm eyes.
Munin: You also assume that just because I called you here to talk about...your career choices that I am not trying to do so as a friend.
She set her cup down with a click, and folded her hands in her lap, while his hands were clenched into fist at his sides
Munin: Tamer was forcefully retired. So what? You have outgrown that persona, just as you have outgrown the need for any other fake names or gimmicks.
Tamer...or maybe not Tamer, looked at Munin as his fist a clenched tighter. His knuckles turned white and blunt nails started to cut into his own skin. The tiny pain registered as he glared down at her, and it was then that he suddenly realized he was standing... The words he just used as effectively as his whip, came back to him. The implications he was making were both cruel and unfair.
He took a deep breath, and exhaled slowly, while unclenching his fist. Breaking eye contact he took a step back to sit back down.
His injured knee buckled underneath him with that step, and he collapsed to the floor with a scream of agony.
Tamer: Damn it!
Munin wanted to move to help the fallen man, but knew that such a thing would just be salt in the wound.
Tamer: I've crossed a line today...
She waited patiently, while he punched the floor, and then began to pull himself up.
Munin: Before you wrestled your last match as Tamer you cut a promo. It was you unfiltered and unmasked. The people loved that man...that night they believed in you. I hate to see you hold yourself back with these pretend hero facades. When the hero the people really want to believe in is you.
He finally made it to his feet still feeling wobbly, and looked at Munin with total regret. He didn't feel deserving of her words, but let them sink in with a deep breath.
Tamer: Kolic took that man to the slaughter... That man lost... Everything
His forlorn look and hopeless words drew a sigh from Munin. She gestured for him to sit back down beside her.
Munin: He didn't take nearly as much as you think. It's all still there, and you have at least one friend...or at least someone that would like to be a friend.
Tamer looks at the seat next to her, and then tore his eyes away to look at the door. He didn't deserve her understanding, he wasn't even sure that he wanted it.
Tamer: I should probably...
The coldness from before seemed to melt, and she gave him a bit of a rueful grin.
Munin: I do not blame you for all of your words...I do typically have a plan or motive. I am a calculating person by nature. I can also be unpredictable, selfish, and morally ambiguous. Above all that however I am honorable, and I have no malicious ulterior motives where you are concerned. So please finish your tea.
He tentatively sat beside her once more. A childish grin creeped across his face, as he tried to think of anyone else that would so honestly list their negative traits.
Tamer: Are you sure this isn't a clever ruse to seduce me?
He laughed at his own words, and immediately threw his hands up in defense. Just incase she did decide to punch him this time.
Instead of taking a swing, she merely grinned back at him in amusement.
Munin: No you are safe from my feminine wiles.
Tamer: Never were falser words spoken.
Tamer winked at her playfully, feeling some of the weight from his earlier words fall away. Perhaps his relief is was caused him to speak so freely for a moment.
Tamer: Look maybe what I'm doing is stupid and unnecessary. But I'm trying to open peoples eyes to how ridiculous things have become.
Munin: I think you could do better under your own name, but the choice is ultimately yours to make. I think only prudent to point out that everyone knows The Desperado is you...
Suddenly Tamer realized that he had spoken perhaps a bit too freely. He cleared his throat, and did his best to adopt a look of innocent confusion.
Tamer: The Who?
For a moment Munin was flabbergasted by his sheer stubbornness.
Munin: Are you serio- The man that dresses as a cowboy and rides a horse into the ring. Sound familiar?
He rubbed his chin with a speculative look, seeing her anything but calm for once was actually amusing.
Tamer: I think you've got something extra in your tea darlin' Creative gimmick though.
Munin: Darlin?
Munin has just begun to consider murder as a viable action when someone could be heard walking towards them.
Jericho: Munin? Where are you?
Munin: On the engawa!
Tamer: No she is not...was not. We did not engawa!
Munin shook her head at him still slightly annoyed at his stubbornness.
Munin: Engawa is the space between the shoji screens and the rain doors. When closed it is a hallway, and when opened it can act as...
She knocked on the hardwood floor where they sat.
Munin: A porch.
Jericho enters through the far doorway with a puzzled look, pointing behind himself with a thumb.
Jericho: There's a horse out there on the-
Stopping when he sees Tamer, his expression changes, with things having just clicked into place.
Jericho: Oh. Yours, then.
Tamer's eyes shoot wide open with surprise. His dislike of Jericho momentarily forgotten.
Tamer: How did she?!? I left her at the.... I mean- um not mine. Munin did you get a horse?
Munin has face palmed by now, and her shoulders shook with silent laughter.
Munin: You are ridiculous. You know that right?
Tamer couldn't help the smile that tugged at his mouth.
Tamer: Yup.
Standing he gave Munin's shoulder a friendly squeeze. The look he gave Jericho was far from friendly and very serious.
He gestured towards himself and the Dread king, before speaking his mind.
Tamer: You and I are going to have a serious conversation about The Clan. A conversation I don't think you're going to enjoy.
He glanced back at Munin with a raised eyebrow.
Tamer: But right now I have to see a ridiculous man about a horse.
Munin: I said it earlier, Kolic made his own choices and he needs to take responsibility for his own actions. So please don't use Mayhem as his cop out, or blame Jericho for his actions...Jericho made a mistake, and he has taken responsibility for that mistake. I know my words may not change your perception on the situation, but please take them into consideration. Kolic will have to save himself this time.
Jericho shifted in place from slight agitation. None of the younger man's words truly got to him. Tamer meant nothing to him after all, but he did have the potential to become...irritating.
Jericho: I'd listen to her. There's also one tiny detail you need to remember.
He was cut off belligerently by Tamer who had no intention of listening to anything the older man had to say.
Tamer: Save it pal...
His words fulfilled Jericho's prediction on his capacity to irritate.
Jericho: Save it? You threaten me and tell me to save it?
Jericho's accent thickened with the early burnings of anger. He begun to move towards Tamer, becoming more peeved with each step.
Munin seeing the possible bloodshed, intervened quickly before things could escalate further. If anyone broke her paper walls before it was time to change them, she would kill someone.
Munin: If a certain ridiculous man doesn't get his horse out of my front yard soon he will clean up its leavings...
Both men paused at the sound of her voice, and the clear underlying message.
Tamer gave Munin a final parting nod after a tense moment of silence. He wasted nothing on Jericho before pushing past, and heading for the door.
