The desert was supposed to be a harsh land. The Wild West. Only crazy Cowboys could survive blazing heat. But that was a time long gone. Now the west had a lot of RX cowboys and Snowbirds. Nothing like trying to get around his hometown of Tucson in the winter.
Unlike his new home in Chicago he didn’t wake up worrying about how many feet of snow had landed overnight, or how brutal the wind-chill would be. No. Here in Tucson the weather was wonderful. Of course you’d never know it by the hordes of Arizonians roaming around in coats as if a cold death awaited them otherwise. Joshua, however, was enjoying the cool Sixty-Three degree day. What he wasn’t enjoying was nearly being killed on his motorcycle as he tried to get out to his ranch.
That was what he had to worry about the second he got out of the airport and retrieved his baby. He’d been nearly hit four times already and every single car had plates that informed him they were just visiting and clearly did not know how to drive. At least he was close now. What awaited him was not harsh. It was his escape. Peaceful. Home.
Not to mention; his girl, who he hadn’t seen in weeks. It was silly but he really missed her. Couldn’t wait to see her. Eve would not be happy. Maybe he should feel bad about how excited he was to get away from Eve for a few days and see Her. But this girl, this beast. It was a different connection. He hoped she would be just as excited to see him. So they could let loose. Hold on while she took him for a ride.
Joshua parked the bike and immediately went out back. A smile across his face.
Joshua: There’s my girl…
She nearly jumped three feet in the air. She knew he was coming and she had even heard the motorcycle. Time alone can do that to a person sometimes. Just her and her thoughts. So many mixed feelings about what she was doing. Kate Greene-Gilespie. She still questioned all of it. Away from her husband. Not even speaking to him. Out here on Joshua’s ranch. Living a hidden life. To be fair Marcus had much more to answer for then her; she may be spending time with the very man that Marcus betrayed. But, it didn’t even compare to the ways that Marcus had changed. Right? She smiled at Joshua.
Kate: Your girl huh?
She raised her eyebrows and gave a little laugh. Joshua rolled his eyes as Kate winked at him.
Kate: Well then. Why don’t you give your girl the hug and kiss I know you’ve been waiting to…
Joshua: You saying she didn’t miss me?
Kate: Of course she did.
Kate smiled at Joshua. Despite the battle hardened hero he always tried to portray. She always found him kind of adorable. As Joshua came close to Kate her smile widened. She could almost laugh at herself for how much she’d been looking forward to this.
Kate: So give her a proper hello already.
Joshua made a clicking noise followed by a whistle. Vera approached quickly and rapidly. Barely slowing down and coming close to nearly stampeding Joshua over. Kate couldn’t help but jump back. Vera lowered her head to Joshua and he leaned his against hers. He ran a hand through her mane and gave her a kiss on the snout.
Kate was brimming watching this big strong man, who to her was nothing more than her adorable little brother. It was always so cute when he was around Vera.
Kate: You two are precious.
Joshua whispered some words to Vera and she trotted off. Then he jokingly and softly punched Kate’s arm.
Joshua: Whatever dork.
Kate: Is Eve coming out?
Joshua: In a few days. Till then you’re stuck being my training partner.
Kate: When you’re not roaming the desert with Vera?
Joshua: Exactly. How’s she been?
Kate: Happy. I take her out at least a couple times a week. She’s happier here then on the road I think. She misses you but otherwise, this is where she belongs.
Joshua: Good. And how are you?
Kate: I’m reflecting. That’s the whole point of this right?
They reach the house and walk inside. Joshua goes right for the fridge and pulls out two bottles of water tossing one to Kate. She catches it as she leans against one of the counters.
Kate: I don’t know… I miss him. I know I’m not supposed to bu-
Joshua: Who said you’re not supposed to miss him? Of course you miss him. How could you not. You’re his wife and the love of his life. Missing him makes sense.
She gives a half smile slightly comforted.
Kate: I just figured something would crack him.
Joshua: Like having a horse kick him off a stage?
Kate: Something like that…
Joshua: I think the problem is…you’re the only one that can bring him back or out of wherever he’s let his mind go.
Kate: Me? He hasn’t been thinking about me this entire time.
Joshua: I doubt that… He loves you. Maybe I’ve over valued my friendship with the guy. But you. Him. That’s love. That doesn’t just go away.
She lets out a heavy sigh. God she hoped he was right. Maybe it was time for her to do something… but what? What could she possibly do?
Kate: I’ll think about it. But right now we have to get you ready for your match against Champa.
Joshua: True Enough. Let’s get changed and hit the barn gym.
As he walks by Kate stops him and gives him a hug. He rest a hand on her back.
Kate: Thank You.
Joshua: Anytime.
They end the hug. Headed in different directions in the house. Him to his room. Her to the guest room. Time to change. The tournament loomed.
