The camera fades in on Queen Street East in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Paul Knight can be seen standing outside by the city street. A black jacket blocks the cold winter wind that is notorious for gusting down the busy streets. Black pants and a white button down shirt with the top button undone complete the outfit and look of a casual gentleman.
Paul glanced up at a sign that read “Lady Marmalade” before he entered the restaurant.
Lady Marmalade had a true Leslieville vibe to it. The art-filled walls and quirky salt and pepper shakers showcase the eccentric atmosphere, which you can also find on the menu.
Paul had been pre-warned that It was always packed, and had prepared ahead of time.
He saw the hostess standing at the front desk as he approached her.
Hostess: May I help you sir?
Paul Knight: Yes I have a reservation for two. I don’t see her here yet tho so I can wait.
Hostess: No need to wait. We have a table ready and I’ll direct her to your table when she arrives.
As the Hostess sat Paul. He grabbed the menu and began to look it over it for something appetizing.
The waiter came by and poured water into the empty glasses.
Paul took the time to nod his head in thanks, and in doing so Knight saw the very female he was waiting for.
Munin took her time weaving through the tables, her presence turned more than a few heads.
She was striking in an effortless way, and a number of women couldn't help but envy how well she pulled off her simple red sweater dress.
On most people it would have looked sloppy and plain, but on Munin it fell in all the right places, while still managing to look adorable as it fell off one shoulder.
Munin: Mr. Knight I presume?
Her large brown eyes sparkled with a mischievous amusement, as she reached out to shake his hand. Knight stood with a smile and returned her hand shake. He was careful to keep his grip on her smaller hand firm but not crushing.
Paul Knight: Yes and I am guessing you are Lady Munin then?
Munin: Guilty.
She took her seat and brushed her thick black braid over her shoulder in an unconscious habit.
Munin: This restaurant is new to me. Have you been here before?
Paul Knight: No this is the first time I have been here. I have heard some great things about it. I am glad I have the opportunity to finally meet you as you also have a great reputation.
Munin had to chuckle at that, but it was far from condescending.
Munin: That is very nice of you to say so, but I can honestly say my reputation depends on who you talk to.
She shot him a quick smile that showed she was quite alright with the fact that many may not think highly of her.
Munin: It is a pleasure to meet you in person as well. I have heard so many rumors and buzz over your latest business venture. I must say it has me curious…
She opened one of the menus to scan as she spoke.
Munin: I look forward to seeing your first show.
Taking her cue Knight also began to look over the menu. Something in his gut told him that this was going to be a meeting that he would not soon forget.
Paul Knight: Thank you. I am interested to seeing what type of fan base we get on December 1st in the Goldring Centre.
He peeked at her over his Munin, and found her still engrossed in her own menu.
Paul Knight: A new federation means huge opportunities for people to make a name for themselves.
Paul picked up his glass of water sip absently, and soon abandoned his pretense of the menu. He already knew what he wanted anyways, and so he set it to the side...and turned his gaze to Munin.
Paul Knight: You know...Your reputation is exactly why I invited to lunch.
He watched her carefully for a reaction, but he was disappointed. She merely smiled and continued to look at her menu.
Paul Knight: I hear the rumblings, but I want to make my own decision about you.
He paused before setting his glass on the table with a slight clink.
Paul Knight: So Lady Munin, I would like to know...why you have been so nice to me. What do you get out of being nice to someone you have never met before today?
That seemed to get her attention, and he had to stop himself from tensing at it. Her dark gaze was intense to say the least.
She kept her silence though, and this pushed Knight to fill the void.
Paul Knight: I know you are a very intellectual woman, and judging from your reputation your actions could be part of a bigger plan.
Munin set her own menu to the side, and graced him with a cheshire grin.
Non like most people she did not seem to be in a hurry to answer him right away.
She took her time studying him weighing him. It was the look a scientist might give a test subject, and many had found it disconcerting in the past.
Yet despite the slight shift in his seat Knight managed to appear largely unaffected.
Munin: Well now don't you just get more interesting by the moment?
She reached out for her own glass of water, while keeping her eyes trained on Knight's.
Munin: Perhaps the better question would be...What would I gain by not being kind. Though honestly can my behavior truly be considered kind?
She paused to sip from her cup, and continued to watch him curiously. Would he take the bait and follow the rabbit, or would he stay on track?
Munin: What do you think?
Paul took his own time to mull over her question. As simple as it had seemed he couldn't help but feel there was an undertone to it.
So he tried to get a feel of what Munin truly meant.Tired to see what her endgame might be, but her poker face was flawless.
Paul Knight: Well..every since you heard about Knights of the Squared Circle you have been lurking in the shadows. You even gave me the number to the Evolution owner so we could work together. Nice of you absolutely, but like I said you have to get something out of this.
He held up a hand as she arched one dark brow at him.
Paul Knight: I'm not saying that I think you want anything like: fine jewelry, money, or ownership. I know it's something, but for the life of me... I can not put my finger on it.
Paul picked up and closed his menu, before putting it back on the table.
Munin watched this with a calm amusement that was even more confusing. Paul was not used to anyone being so difficult to get answers from.
He wasn't full of himself, but he knew he was intelligent. It was typically easy to get the information he wanted from someone (especially women) by merely guiding the conversation.
It was almost like a game, but this time he couldn't help feeling that he was the one being played with.
Munin: Have you by any chance ever conversed with a gentleman named Kolic lately? I have a feeling you two would get along...
She turned her attention away from him momentarily to signal the waitress.
Munin: I could tell you that association to a new federation brings a lot of exposure with it that can benefit both sides…
Paul nodded his head, and replied before she could twist things further.
Paul Knight: Well, to answer your question I haven’t spoken to a gentleman by that name, but I have no doubt I will hear from him soon.
He rested his elbows and leaned forward slightly.
Paul Knight:Let’s turn our focus back to you. You seem to be someone who knows a lot more than you say. Enjoy being mysterious. So Lady Munin I’ll ask you again … What do you get out of it?
Munin settled back into her chair with the slightest of pouts. It was gone quickly, but perfectly timed. Others may have even thought their assumptions had been incorrect. It was incredible how adorable someone with her dangerous reputation and allure could be. Paul held his ground though and waited patiently.
Munin: It's quite simple really...your new federation will attract a number of interesting characters of various talents.
She shrugged her small shoulders causing her other shoulder to bare itself slightly.
Munin: This intrigues me and leaves me eager to watch it unfold. To see how it plays out will be very...interesting. In short sir I am simply curious. At least for now...
Paul took in her words and could find no hint of deceit in them. Though he still felt that she wasn't telling him everything.
Paul Knight: You know what they say about curiosity? Curiosity is, in great and generous minds, the first passion and the last. So would you like a front row seat to Uprising on December 1st then? Do you want backstage access? Are you going to join the roster? It seems the more questions you answer the more questions I have, and yet I cannot seem to stop myself from asking...
Munin laughed softly at his serious expression. This meal was proving far more entertaining than she had anticipated.
Munin: Ah, if all of life's questions were answered then life would be very dull indeed. I would be happy to accept your invitation for front row seats, but I have already bought my tickets.
She absently pushed her glass away from her, and reached for her small pocket book.
Munin: However I would like to repay the attempted favor with one of my own.
She pulled out two sets of tickets and slid them across the table. One set was for Evolution Wrestling's Bad Behavior, and the other for GZW's Arctic Blast. She slid them across the table, all the while holding his gaze.
Munin: For now I will simply watch Mr. Knight.
Paul looked at the tickets, before he tucked them away in inside pocket of his jacket.
Paul Knight: Okay and what am I watching for at these events? Are you going to tell me why you want me there, or will I have to guess?
Munin blinked at him slowly, and gave him her most innocent of smiles.
Munin: You are a very suspicious man, has anyone ever told you that, or are you just this cautious with me?
Paul Knight: When you can incite so much emotion from a man like Alex Cross…Well one has to wonder exactly what secrets you hide behind your smiling mask, and what motives…
He couldn't help the smile that tugged at the corners of his mouth. Nor could he resist a rueful chuckle, as he shook his head.
Paul Knight: I will say this Lady Munin, you absolutely intrigue the heck out of me. The way that you carry yourself and conduct your business...You are truly a woman unlike any other I have ever had the pleasure of doing business with. I can now safely say that some of those rumblings are true, and so I must be careful. I wouldn't want anything to come back to bite me later...
A noticeable amount of warmth left her eyes at the mention of Alex Cross. Munin busied herself by fiddling noticeably with the butter knife until he had finished speaking.
When he had finished Munin let the silence hang between them for a moment. Always one to choose her words carefully, to hear conversations were much like a game of chess. I was always important to look at the moves ahead, and not just the one before you.
Munin: People have this odd misunderstanding when it comes to the simple and the complex. They seem to think that concepts are two separate things, but in all honesty they are the same thing. At least more often than not, things can be as simple or complex as you aim to make them.
Munin paused as the waitress finally arrived with hurried apologies. She took their orders quickly before rushing off again.
As she left Munin turned her attention back to her dining companion.
Munin: The simple answer is I invited you because I felt like it. I can give you my word that there are no nefarious consequences in seeing either show, and my word is my honor sir. You are however, free to make those statements as complex as you like.
Paul Knight: Fair enough, and I know your word is your honor. While you may be known to be morally grey, you are also known for being honorable to a fault. At least until someone breaks the rules, the implied contract when you give your word. Then you are no longer held by the bonds of your honor... You may forgive but you never forget right?
She looked slightly amused at this, the warmth slowly seeping back into her eyes.
Munin: Aren't you an observant one. I do have a rather long memory…
Paul Knight: You can close your eyes to reality but not to memories...they last forever.
He leaned back into his chair with a cheeky boyish grin.
Paul Knight: And I am more than a pretty face my lady!
Munin was forced to giggle at his antics. It was an honest laugh that actually took her by surprise.
It was now her turn to give rueful smile.
Munin: So you are, and as for memories…
She sighed and picked up her glass of water once more.
Munin: I guess I am rather stuck with my memories. Munin is Odin's raven of memory after all...
For a moment she looked wistful and a little forlorn. It didn't last long, but the fleeting glimpse behind her pleasant mask tightened something in Knight’s chest.
Paul Knight: I would like to apologize if I came off a bit harsh in the beginning of our conversation. Let’s just say people have used me in the past, and I want to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Fool me once fool me twice...you know the rest.
Munin smiled at him the previous moment erased from her face. All that was left was a quiet understanding.
Munin: Think nothing of it, I never answer any question I don't want to answer.
Paul Knight: That is fair enough. Also as far as your ticket goes I’ll reimburse you that money because it is the right thing to do. So do you have any questions you have to ask me?
Munin grinned, her previous mischief returned in her smile, and the glimmer of secrets shone in her eyes.
Munin: Are you hungry? The food is finally here.
Paul Knight: Yes I am and please no arguing with me this meal is my treat.
Munin nodded her head in acceptance.
Munin: I know when to pick my battles.
Paul smiled at her compliance, as the food was set before them.
Paul Knight: As I said you are a smart woman.
