Audio transcript of interview with GZW2K1 Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion Kandi Fortune-Corbin conducted on February 6th, 2008
"Thank you for having this sitdown with me, Mrs. Fortune-Corbin. I know you're out here in Vegas enjoying the glitz and glamour, but we here at TurnbuckleInTheDesert.com couldn't pass up the chance to speak with a wrestling legend such as yourself."
"Legend...is my husband somewhere around here...haha...I wouldn't go that far to consider myself a legend but I thank you for thinking that."
"Let's jump right into this shall we? Is there dissention in the Kindred right now? There have been a litany of rumors concerning problems between you and your stepson, the current Ground Zero Global Unified Heavyweight Champion Lord Leon Taylor, the hospitalization of your husband Ring of Honor Icon James "Monarch" Corbin, and a budding sibling rivalry between Lord Taylor and your other stepson ex-GZW2K1 World Tag Team Champion Tommy "The Future" Casper have all been attributed to demise of the group. What is really going on?
"Hmm....there is no dissention within The Kindred...at least not anymore than any other stable...any other family. I think things have gotten blown up because of the fact The Kindred is a family. We're not just a simple collection of wrestlers brought together by the company to sell merchandise...something we do well by the way...but we are a breathing living entity that is bonded by blood. So regardless of what happens to The Kindred we will still continue to be a family."
"But what of the purported problems between you and Lord Taylor? He was glaringly missing tonight at HKWF's MASSIVE broadcast where you and your other stepson, Tommy Casper, attended."
"Well I'm not sure where you gentlemen get your info from but there is no problems currently between my oldest stepson and me. Leon wasn't able to attend tonight's show because he had prior commitments elsewhere...he is the Ground Zero Global Unified Heavyweight Champion. Tommy and I attended MASSIVE as paying guest and not in any official GZW2K1 capacity. It was a good thing we did attend as we were able to assist our Voodoo mate Raze [Jericho Cross] from being systematically taken out by Da Goonies after his successful defense of the Hong Kong Wrestling Federation Hardcore Championship against Killah Sam."
"Fair enough, Mrs. Fortune-Corbin."
"Please call me Kandi."
"All right, Kandi. With recent back injuries sustained by 2006 Lord of the Coliseum Jon H. Kellar at Aftermath2K7 and a well-documented longstanding neck injury, are you at one-hundred percent to return to the ring so soon, especially at Crimson Maux D'Amour III where you are slated to be one of twenty-four competitors in the ninth Contest of Champions battle royale?"
"When is any wrestler one-hundred percent? James [Corbin] always equates a wrestler's health to that of a brand new car...the moment it is driven off the assembly line it is no longer brand new...somebody has driven it...someone has put miles on it. So if anyone in our sport that has really been around it long enough can attest to they are never at one-hundred percent. That being said I've been cleared by my own doctor as well as GZW2K1's medical staff to compete again so I will be ready to compete in Contest of Champions Nine."
"Anyone you will be specifically targetting or is that too revealing?"
"Not at all...hell, he should already know that I'm coming for him. If he doesn't than he's more delusional than he would have everyone believe."
"I take it you're refering to Lord Jon H. Kellar?"
"The one and only. Lord Kellar went out of his way to make his point...I mean I would have totally understood if he would have made his triumphant return during my match against Tommy and simply blindsided us....that's the nature of our business...I can accept that. What I have issue with is that fact Kellar went beyond the scope of wrestling and tried to take my livelihood...my passion...away from me. In this sport that's just something you don't do...regardless how much we hate each other...how much competition is out there....it's an unwritten rule you don't try to end someone's career."
"That totally makes sense. Besides there is no money in it if someone does try to end someone's career."
"Exactly...especially in the long run. Aside from Lord Kellar I'm just looking to have the most fun I can possibly have in this thing. It's not everyday we have Contest of Champions so when one rolls around you have to know it's going to be a fun thing."
"So what happens if you win?"
"Don't make it sound like it would be a strange thing for me to win...I mean I have won one of these things before and went on to face James for the World title."
"Sorry, Kandi. I didn't mean for it to come off like that. Everyone is just curious on what will happen if you do win Contest of Champions Nine and go to Anniversary Armageddon at the end of the month to face Lord Taylor for the GZW2K1 World Heavyweight Championship?"
"My son and I would wrestle....plain and simple. It perplexes me that this sport has become so bogged down with the idea that two athletes can't simply compete for the sake of competing....that there always has to be some kind of tension between two people to wrestle or that two people can't wrestle that haven't wrestle before without there being some built in feud or reasoning behind them facing off. I don't know how this raw attitude came about but I wish it would just go away."
"If I do get the chance to face Leon for the World title you can best believe that the two of us will put on a wrestling clinic that will show everyone how a wrestling match is truly suppose to be. Regardless of who would win we would both embrace and know that the best person is representing GroundZero Wrestling 2K1 as its World Heavyweight Champion."
"Speaking of World Heavyweight Champions, most recently former three-time GZW2K1 World Heavyweight Champion Zachary Sharp conducted an on-air interview stating that the two of you had more than a professional relationship. He also stated that the four plus year feud between him and your husband, Ring of Honor Icon James "Monarch" Corbin, is over Icon Monarch's jealousy concerning this relationship. Is there any truth to those allegations?"
"Nice segway. [Kandi giggles] I haven't seen the interview in question but I've been told my several people that it's being broadcast on GZG360. Honestly I didn't know if that was the reason why Zac and James have been at each others' throats for years...I've always tried to steer clear of that rivalry. Neither men have confided in me concerning the root of their problem with one another."
"And what of the allegations that Zachary Sharp and yourself have had more than a professional relationship?"
"It's no secret that at one time there were...how shall I say this...'amicable feelings' shared between the two of us. When Zac first came into GZW2K1 it was at a point in my life I was at my most weakest....I was really striving to make headway...to get some respect in this sport as a figurehead. Of course in hindsight I know all I did was create a deeper chasm between the boys and myself...but at the time I was anothing short of a bitch. On top of that I was dealing with the mental abuse I suffered at the actions of my deceased mother and my oldest sister [Nikita "Strife" Fortune]....so all of that made me reach out to whomever showed me any kind of attention."
"So there was something going on off screen?"
"You also have to remember that there is a HUGE age difference between Zac and I....I'm almost old enough to be his mother! During that period of time Zac was truly a child...only about seventeen or eighteen if I remember correctly. That might fly in Canada but in America it's statutory rape. But for the record I do and always will love Zac....regardless of what happens...or has happened...he and I will always be connected in some form or fashion. We will forever be kind..."
It is at this point audio equipment experienced malfunctioning issues.
"Finally we've heard news that your company, Crown Firebird, has been one of the partners with Ground Zero Enterprises to buy mixed martial arts organization GLORY. Is this true?"
"I was wondering whether or not I was going to ever get asked this question. Yes it is true that Crown Firebird...the company James and I have started early last year...are part owner of GLORY. Mixed martial arts is huge right now in North America and when we found out GLORY was having money issues we jumped at the chance to partner with Logan Corzair and his partners in breathing new life into MMA's oldest fighting organization."
"Plus it doesn't hurt that your brother, Marcus Fortune, has been a viable heavyweight contender in GLORY for years now?"
"No...that doesn't hurt at all...but Crown Firebird will have no direct influence over day-to-day operations such as booking. Our attorneys have warned us beforehand about any conflict of interests. [Kandi giggles] We will be looking to bring the great Ground Zero Global fans that are accustomed to great wrestling and chance to view great mixed martial arts."
"Thank you again, Kandi, for this sitdown with TurnbuckleInTheDesert.com. We hope to have you back on. Good luck in the Contest of Champions Nine and with all your ventures with Crown Firebird."
"The pleasure was all mine, guys."
